'Godhood' Early Access Update Adds Tech Tree, Visual Overhaul, And More

by Rainier on Oct. 24, 2019 @ 8:20 a.m. PDT

Godhood takes place in a vibrant, primal world where players take on the role of a newborn deity, developing their own religion from scratch, all while managing their followers and challenging any other gods that stand in their way.

In Godhood, players create their own religion by tending to their flock of disciples as a young god. Set in ancient lands and viewed from an isometric perspective, the player’s followers cannot be directly controlled but are influenced by the choices and direction of their god.

From cat worshipping to human sacrifices, Godhood will let players become a newborn deity and experiment with dozens of different dogmas as they create their own religion. As a divine leader they will have to set clear rules and guide their followers by defining what constitutes a virtue or vice, and what rituals to practice. However, prospective gods will soon learn that their worshippers come with a fair chunk of free will and that control over them isn’t total.

In a world where worship means everything, and the number of followers is directly related to the success of a deity, players have to prevent other gods from converting followers, while also increasing their own ranks by continuing the spread of their religion. This religious to and fro makes conflict inevitable and players will face their rivals in ritual combat known as Sacraments. These battles can only be won if players carefully prepare their most trusted worshippers in advance, using rituals to strengthen their faith.

Abbey Games has released a massive free update for their colourful management god game Godhood called ‘Create Your Own Religion’

The new update enhances the core game experience of Godhood significantly, adding amongst other things a brand-new tech tree, a major visual overhaul, a series of new religious customization options, and last but not least featuring the hotly-requested cat worshipping and new funeral rites mechanics (aka followers can now opt to consume their dead).

The ‘Create Your Own Religion’  update includes:

  • A brand-new tech tree, with numerous mutually exclusive paths, letting players further customize the Commandments that form the base of their personalized religion. Forgoing a set progression, the new tree grants players the flexibility to make changes to their chosen religion earlier and with greater effect.
  • Unlockable Tenets, allowing the player to mix and max their Commandments, granting even further depth to their religion.
  • Increased challenge thanks to the new Crystal Skulls mechanic, updated Sacraments, and a reworked World Map introducing high-scores. Crystal Skulls dictate how and when the player can initiate the Sacrament battles. These auto-battles have also been updated with a new initiative system and disciple targeting stances.
  • A substantial graphics make-over, with a host of new visual touches, bringing out the life and detail of the player’s village, buildings, and followers. Over ninety hand-crafted illustrations have also been added, showing how a player’s customized religion develops with each important milestone.
  • A vast range of other improvements, changes and player-requested content, including a rebalance of the in-game economy and recruitment mechanics. Also, followers can now worship cats (and dogs).

Godhood is available as Early Access title through on Steam and GOG (Windows/Mac/Linux)

Key Features:

  • Create your religion: Godhood lets players create the religion they wish to propagate. Creation is up to the player, and their choices will set the course for what type of deity they want to be.
  • Guide your disciples: Players define what is important for their followers, selecting virtues and vices, which guide them in how they live and what rituals they undertake. Through guidance, help disciples rise to become powerful prophets who train future generations, and carry the religion forward throughout the ages.
  • Literally play god: As a god, influence is imparted through the use of a wide range of abilities and powers. Rather than having direct control over them, disciples react to the actions of their god and act of their own accord. Deciding what rituals to enact or which monument to build is key to a prosperous society and devoted following.
  • Ritual combat: Other deities and religions battle for power and influence, leading to ritual combat with opposing gods. Known as ‘Sacraments’, players’ followers will need to prove their worth through the use of awe, persuasion, and brute force.
  • Colourful art style: Charming visuals with bright, hand-drawn qualities depict the new and unknown world of Godhood with a lush, isometric perspective.
  • Replayability: Powered by a deep simulation system, Godhood allows players to experiment with dozens of different religious combinations unlocking new secrets as they progress along a main storyline filled with battles, rituals, and challenging side quests.

Godhood is set to be released on PC in 2019.
