'Population Zero' Details Its Combat System

by Rainier on Oct. 25, 2019 @ 8:50 a.m. PDT

Population Zero is a distinctive blend of survival and MMO set on the planet Kepler, an alien world far on the periphery of mankind’s own knowledge.

With hundreds of players on a single server, real meaningful character progression, an in-depth narrative, and a rich vibrant and changing world driven by the players’ actions, Population Zero will raise the bar for what it means to be a multiplayer survival experience.

Population Zero is a distinctive blend of survival and MMO set on the planet Kepler, an alien world far on the periphery of mankind’s own knowledge. As with all frontiers, the world will resist those who try to explore it, plumb it for resources, and vie to uncover its secrets. The creatures that inhabit Kepler will become for the player not just a source of valuable resources, but clever and skillful enemies, each of which is unique in its behavior and abilities and has its own role in the ecosystem of the planet.

Research a plethora of technologies to drive you and your faction’s fortunes higher. Uncover a deeply shrouded mystery of the world before you arrived. Develop your character to be unique among the thousands, in a world where the actions you take drive your progress in a multitude of skills. Population Zero is a survival game unlike any other, an MMO different from those before it, and an experience that will bring friends closer together over the shared goal of exploring and conquering the new frontier.

The combat system in PZO encourages you to be mindful of every move. PvP and PvE fully depend on the player’s gaming knowledge, quick reflexes, and strategic thinking. You will need to pay close attention to these five bars: Hunger, Thirst, Health, Cooling, and even Overheating. Don’t ever expect to win unless your character is fully equipped prepared to do battle.

There are two types of attacks: melee and ranged. Weapons are split into 3 categories: pointed, edged and blunt. Your choice of armor type will depend on the crafting materials you use and the enemies you encounter. Your weapon of choice will differ based on attack moves, damage types, and range of combat. As you might expect from a survival game, farming and searching for unique materials will take time, so you have to be patient.

The outcome of the fight is decided not only by the items you craft but also by the unique perks you choose. Perks can be either permanent or temporary. Temporary perks can be lost after death making each encounter even more dangerous.

Your gradual transformation into a Void adds new gameplay features. This creature is stronger and more agile than a regular colonist.

All of this alongside carefully selected perks and handpicked equipment gives the player freedom of choice. Ranged attacks, combo strings, dashes, jump attacks, dodging and blocking can create a unique and one of a kind playstyle. You won’t be skill spamming in Population Zero.

It will take time to master PZO’s combat system: it’s not easy dodging, blocking, attacking and maintaining your health bar all at the same time.

Surprisingly, world exploration plays a considerable role. In order to craft equipment, you will have to roam the planet. Only by learning about life on Kepler will you be able to acquire the knowledge needed for crafting.

Raid bosses have to be fought by multiple players and demand preparation. Hunting mobs tend to be more beneficial if players team-up.

In the end, it’s up to the player who he wishes to become: a builder, a warrior or a researcher. However, combat is unavoidable in Population Zero. Whether it’s against aliens or other players.
