Star Citizen delivers the next generation of space flight simulation gaming, combining FPS (First Person Shooter) combat and persistent MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) gameplay to create a living, breathing first person universe capable of truly unlimited gameplay experiences. In addition, through the game's advanced Newtonian physics engine, Star Citizen enables players to experience an unparalleled space sim flying experience with ship control, performance and response calculated based on dozens of dynamically generated physics based variables.
Star Citizen will not require a subscription, and not be free-to-play, it will will be available for a one-time purchase. And while players will be able to play in the Star Citizen universe for free, there will also be virtual items available for purchase with in-game credits so players can customize their ships and other items.
Today, Star Citizen made several announcements, including a Free Fly for EVERY ship in the game.
Here’s what’s going on:
- IAE Free Fly - this is a Free Fly for ALL of Star Citizen’s 100+ flyable ships, variants and vehicles. It rolls out through our in-game manufacturers, with one manufacturer per day making their entire inventory available. Starting Nov 24 and ending Dec 5, it will be free for anyone to download and play Star Citizen, with all ships.
- Welcome Hub - Star Citizen has one of the most welcoming and friendly communities in gaming. Every day, we see threads pop up on Spectrum and Reddit along the lines of “I’m new to Star Citizen and need help!” Oftentimes, Star Citizen veterans will then invite these new players into the game as a sort of “Guide.” Well, this Welcome Hub formalizes that, and will matchmake those who volunteer as Guides to those who ask for help, so they can get in to Star Citizen, together. Additionally, the Welcome Hub includes updated video and written tutorials. You can get an idea of how this will work through the screenshots in the Dropbox linked below. The Welcome Hub launches Nov 22.
- CitizenCon – our yearly event, CitizenCon is packed with tons of Star Citizen news and reveals. It will be streamed in full here. Streaming begins Nov 23 at 1:00 GMT / 5:00 AM PT / 8:00 AM ET.
To celebrate the Star Citizen community’s signature event of 2019, Cloud Imperium will launch a “Free Fly” event encompassing its stable of more than 100 flyable vehicles. Normally, access to the Star Citizen Alpha requires pledging for a $45 starter pack, but during this event, prospective players can create a free account at robertsspaceindustries.com to download the game client for free and begin playing Star Citizen from Nov. 24 to Dec. 5.
Within the game’s “Intergalactic Aerospace Expo,” located in Area 18 of the city-planet ArcCorp, each in-game ship manufacturer will make its entire flyable inventory free (over 100 ships in total) for a 24-hour “Test Flight,” after which it will then be replaced by the inventory from another manufacturer. During the Expo, it will be free for anyone to join the Star Citizen Persistent Universe and play across Star Citizen’s more than 30 varying mission types, two planets, 12 traversable moons, procedurally generated “rest stops,” and more. Players who accumulate in-game currency can use it to rent or purchase additional ships, flyable until each server re-start. For more information on the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo, visit here on November 24.
For those new to Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium will debut a “Welcome Hub” that includes all-new tutorials and a “Guide System” that matches new players with Star Citizen Community veterans that are willing to teach new players the ropes. The Welcome Hub and Guide System will both launch on November 22 and can be found at the official website.
The Star Citizen Free Fly will include numerous features launched in the last few patches including:
- FPS Mining: In addition to ship mining via the MISC Prospector spaceship, players can enter caves to deploy the new Greycat Industrial Pyro Multitool to scour for resources and mine them, accumulating valuable resources to trade and sell.

- Commodity Inventory: A personal inventory system allowing players to store various commodities, including items bought from kiosks or stores, and harvestables discovered in the environment.
- Mission Sharing: Allows players to share Star Citizen’s 30+ missions with other parties, promoting co-op gameplay and allowing grouped players to all see, track, and complete objectives while sharing in the rewards.
- Ship Purchases & Rentals: Allows players to rent and purchase ships from selected shops for limited periods via in-game currency, increasing player choice and ship accessibility. With these features, players can acquire ships purely through gameplay and earning in-game currency.
