'Moonlighter' (ALL) Friends & Foes Update Adds New Companions, Minibosses, And More - Trailer

by Rainier on Feb. 13, 2019 @ 5:00 a.m. PST

Moonlighter is a 2D action/RPG with rogue-lite elements following the everyday routines of the aforementioned Will, Rynoka’s ambitious shopkeeper that dreams of becoming a hero.

Moonlighter’s story dates back to a time many years ago when a set of magical Gates was discovered during an archaeological excavation. People quickly realized that these ancient passages lead to different realms and dimensions — providing brave and reckless adventurers with treasures beyond measure. Rynoka, a small commercial village, was founded near the excavation site providing refuge and a place for adventurers to sell their hard-earned riches.

Moonlighter is the story of Will, a dexterous shopkeeper by day who secretly dreams of becoming a hero while stocking his shelves. By night, Will ventures into the dungeons behind the Gates to vanquish the monsters within and fill his pack with loot.

One part rogue-lite and one part shop management, Moonlighter from 11 bit studios and Digital Sun sends you into the dungeons in search of loot to fill your shelves. But, the shop won’t run itself. Between runs, you’ll need to set prices, craft new wares, hire assistants, and keep sticky-fingered shoplifters at bay.

As part of the new Moonlighter ‘Friends & Foes’ update, launching today for free on all platforms, Digital Sun and 11 bit studios are introducing nine new companions to the game.

Now, even though the freshly introduced nine familiars can’t really talk, they’re more than happy to aid you during your most dangerous adventures to the dungeons outside the merchant village of Rynoka. We wouldn’t want to make Moonlighter too easy, of course, so to counterbalance your buddy upgrades the developers have also added brand-new, ferocious minibosses (so hopefully you and your new companions are getting on well with each other. You’re gonna need all the help you can get!).

New Features & Major Changes

  • Companions — Nine new familiars have arrived to aid you in your dungeon crawling! Kill a particular enemy 10 times and a very special egg will appear! Give the egg three days to hatch and your fresh-faced familiar will be ready for action! Each sporting different mechanics, they can damage enemies, restore your life, get items for you, act as an additional chest, and more!
  • Minibosses — Eight new minibosses are here to challenge you! They will appear as guardians of the dungeons, securing gateways leading to deeper rooms. They will emerge at the end of the first and second floor in each dungeon.
  • Zenon’s Campfire — From now on, when you visit the dungeons at night, Zenon will be there, sitting by his campfire, ready to tell you some forgotten stories of Rynoka and Moonlighter’s world. Those tales will be unlocked with the game’s progression.
  • Tomo Stories — We've modified and added more lines for Tomo. They should explain her relationship with Will better, shedding some light on their mutual past.
  • Banker Information — We have introduced a lot of special warnings and UI changes to avoid the Banker "stealing" your money. A lot of you forgot to revisit that mustachioed capitalist and were losing the investment.
  • Sorting Items — We've added a sorting mechanic inside the inventory.
  • Get the Broom!: We’ve added the possibility to get the Broom™ from Le Retailer (if you’ve managed to lose it somehow!). The Broom™ is important for getting some achievements - so we hope you like this little feature!
  • Prices Update — We’ve added a new system in the Shop to better inform whenever an item’s price gets updated.
  • + Minor changes and Fixes

If you ever wondered how all those legendary weapons and armour make their way into fantasy shops and markets - Moonlighter solves this conundrum by showing step-by-step the route of each item. From locked chests protected by vicious bosses in the deepest dungeons to convenient and elegant store shelves.

During an archeological excavation - a set of Gates were discovered. People quickly realized that these ancient passages lead to different realms and dimensions. Rynoka, a small trading village, was found near the excavation site - providing brave and reckless adventurers with treasures beyond measure.

Rynoka operates as a safe haven and a marketplace for all travelers, those careless and cautious alike - but achieving both glory and gold proved more challenging than expected.

Key Features:

  • Moonlighter's dual nature is represented by both adventuring and shopkeeping activities, guaranteeing a well balanced, rewarding experience
  • While managing your business in Rynoka, player can put items on sale, manage gold reserves, upgrade the shop, and many more. Understanding needs of customers is important - some of them may have special missions for you, requesting rare items and offering handsome rewards in return
  • Exploring randomly generated dungeons, player will encounter variety of enemies and bosses, collect special items and manage loot using special inventory-based abilities. Moonlighter's goal is to make each run unique and force the player to take some smart decisions
  • Moonlighter has a crafting and enchanting system that is essential for the player progression. Interacting with the NPCs in Rynoka is the way to craft new armors, weapons and enchant existing equipment. This creates a great deal of flexibility and spices up the way the equipment is used
  • Moonlighter is very challenging and has deep combat mechanics. The depth of combat depends on the interactions between weapons, abilities, enemies and secondary effects of items. We want players to feel comfortable developing their own battling style

Containing a double-sided Medallion from the game, the Signature Edition also includes a glossy artwork poster and a squishy Jelly-Monster that you can repeatedly squeeze all while thinking about how to economically outsmart other merchants in the village of Rynoka.

Moonlighter is currently available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC and PS4.
