'Population Zero' Shows Off Its Building Mechanics - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Feb. 6, 2019 @ 11:46 a.m. PST

Population Zero is a distinctive blend of survival and MMO set on the planet Kepler, an alien world far on the periphery of mankind’s own knowledge.

With hundreds of players on a single server, real meaningful character progression, an in-depth narrative, and a rich vibrant and changing world driven by the players’ actions, Population Zero will raise the bar for what it means to be a multiplayer survival experience.

Population Zero is a distinctive blend of survival and MMO set on the planet Kepler, an alien world far on the periphery of mankind’s own knowledge. As with all frontiers, the world will resist those who try to explore it, plumb it for resources, and vie to uncover its secrets. The creatures that inhabit Kepler will become for the player not just a source of valuable resources, but clever and skillful enemies, each of which is unique in its behavior and abilities and has its own role in the ecosystem of the planet.

Research a plethora of technologies to drive you and your faction’s fortunes higher. Uncover a deeply shrouded mystery of the world before you arrived. Develop your character to be unique among the thousands, in a world where the actions you take drive your progress in a multitude of skills. Population Zero is a survival game unlike any other, an MMO different from those before it, and an experience that will bring friends closer together over the shared goal of exploring and conquering the new frontier.

To build your own house in Population Zero you will have to put in some work. You explore the world, you gather necessary resources, you fight the alien planet’s life forms and sometimes other players. With time, you will be able to build your own colony, claiming territory as your own and from there, what you do in the World of PZ is up to you. Questing, raiding strong and smart alien monsters, or perhaps engaging in PvP.

This trailer is all about what you can achieve if you are creative and patient. Building in Population Zero will be more than just making square textured boxes to store your resources and wait out the night. You will have many different shapes and forms, decorations and defence mechanisms to play with while building, along with different tiers as well as fences and gates to make sure your fortress is unassailable.

During the pre-alpha we adjusted the building balance so that resource gathering does not feel tedious. To get the most out of gathering, you use specific tools. Each resource on the map can give you different materials depending on what tool you use. Some resources are only obtainable at night, but be wary! Many creatures are much harder to spot when it’s dark, making the process dangerous as well as rewarding.

We have a durability and weight system in place to ensure that no structure looks unnatural, to make it impossible to build skyscrapers out of sticks and stones. This mechanic makes raiding other players a big part of the experience for you have to discover weaknesses in structural integrity of their buildings in order to bring them down.

Depending on your character’s progression, the space in which you can build becomes larger. By joining others via our guild system you can make settlements and claim resource points and dominate entire regions of the planet.

Fans interested in the Alpha Tests can still sign up now.
