'Gloomhaven' Introduces First Four Characters - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on May 8, 2019 @ 5:45 p.m. PDT

Gloomhaven is a dungeon-crawling RPG featuring tactical turn-based combat, an infinitely replayable roguelike mode.

The PC version of the board game, Gloomhaven shares a world and lore with its analog predecessor but takes on a new life as a challenging turn-based tactical RPG.

Set in a medieval fantasy world, players will struggle to survive through procedurally generated dungeons filled with deadly enemies, equipment to find, and powerful abilities to unlock, with much more in the works for the full launch.

In the digital adaptation of Isaac Childres’ ultimate strategic board game, developed by Flaming Fowl Studios, you play as a squad of 2-4 mercenaries in a world of darkness and trials. Gloomhaven is a balanced mix between tactical, RPG and dungeon-crawling. Its legendary unforgiving difficulty rewards only the best strategic-thinking players.

Seasoned adventurers will have to wisely weigh all their decisions, as every choice in Gloomhaven has consequences. The turn-based, tactical, dark fantasy game rewards strategic planning and thinking, not luck. Players will master 17 playable characters, featuring more than 1,000 unique abilities. Different sets of abilities allow unique build paths for each character leading to multiple team synergies in order to face more than 50 different enemies. From gloom, only greed and death emerge!

The first characters in Gloomhaven include:

  • The versatile Savvas Cragheart

The Cragheart is the one that throws rocks and makes explosions! But it is so much more than that in Gloomhaven.

The Cragheart is one of the most versatile classes in the entirety of Gloomhaven and can play a variety of playstyles -- a frontline tank, utility through heals and crowd control, or even an AoE damage dealer. Take advantage of the Cragheart's flexibility to complement basically any team, but watch out for its AoE skills which are capable of dealing friendly fire damage!

As such a versatile class, capable of so many ways to play, it is perfect for players of any skill level.
  • The powerful but fragile Orchid Spellweaver

The Spellweaver is the most well-rounded mage in the game, but at the same time the most complicated of the starting characters. Like the Cragheart, she is very versatile, able to be played as a ranged glass cannon, a support/utility character, or even a mix. She has a low health pool, meaning you always want to keep her far from the fight, but has some key abilities to help with this. She is capable of preventing damage, healing and even summoning minions.

As a high damage character with lots of cool single target and AoE abilities, as well as the capability to heal and support, she works well in any group to round out the team.

  • The tank-like Inox Brute

The Brute is your team's powerhouse. He is a straightforward character that makes him easy to understand and enjoy for any new player. He has a high health pool and massive single target damage which, at later levels, can pierce through armor! This makes him capable of hitting hard, but also have the ability to take heavy hits in return.

With all of these traits added together, they make him an optimal starting character that can be used for taking down even the tankiest of opponents.

  • The stealthy Human Scoundrel

The Scoundrel is a guerrilla-style assassin -- she gets in range to deal as much damage as possible, then gets out just as quick with stealth abilities. She has super-high damage, but sacrifices defense and utility. She is capable of hitting multiple targets with some of her skills, applying poison to her foes, and assassinating vulnerable targets.

She is straightforward and excels at what she does, making her a solid damage dealing choice for your party. Her looting abilities are also unparalleled, capable of grabbing up gear and gold like no other.

At the beginning of Early Access, players will be able to experience adventure mode, featuring rogue-like mechanics unique to the PC platform. During Early Access, content will be added on a regular basis, expanding enemies and character rosters, environments and adventures. Later, players will be able to dive into story mode, featuring 95 missions from the board game campaign that can also be played with other players via online Cooperative play.

Key Features:

  • Discover the digital adaptation of Isaac Childres’ ultimate strategic board game.
  • Face countless enemies in the dungeons of this turn-based rogue-like game with addictive and tactical gameplay.
  • A huge variety of hero classes are available so that you can create your own custom group of formidable champions!
  • Each hero class may be played in various ways. Do you prefer the Cragheart to be soaking up damages on the frontline or crushing your enemies in a crater? It’s up to you to choose your specialty.
  • Don’t forget to consider all of your characters’ skills to create a truly epic team!
  • Also, please do not feed the development minions after midnight. Who knows what could happen?

Designed by Isaac Childres, the Gloomhaven board game launched in 2017, raising $4.4 million between two successful Kickstarter campaigns. Since launch, Gloomhaven has received extremely positive reviews from critics and has been rated the “No. 1 Board Game Of All Time” by BoardGameGeek where it also won six Golden Geek Awards.

Gloomhaven is in development and scheduled to launch on Steam Early Access in summer 2019.
