'SEGA Ages' (Switch) Adds Virtua Racing and Wonder Boy To Its Lineup

by Rainier on June 27, 2019 @ 8:35 a.m. PDT

SEGA Ages is a series that bring classic retro games to modern consoles, coming to the West for the first time.

SEGA Ages is a series of classic SEGA titles being released on the Nintendo Switch.

Developed by M2, the Japanese developer known for high-quality ports of classic games such as the popular SEGA 3D Classics series on the 3DS, SEGA Ages aims to bring prominent titles from SEGA's legacy catalog to fans around the world. From a selection of home console classics, to a multitude of perfectly-emulated arcade games, SEGA Ages gives fans the ability to build their own retro SEGA collection unlike any other.

The first five SEGA Ages titles have been announced, including such notable games as the Sega Master System versions of Phantasy Star and Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sega Genesis versions of Thunder Force IV and Sonic the Hedgehog, as well as a port of the original arcade version of Gain Ground. This collection will mark the first time that several SEGA titles have had official launches in the West.

SEGA Ages originally debuted as SEGA Ages Vol. 1 Shukudai ga Tant-R, a compilation of enhanced arcade ports of Puzzle & Action: Tant-R and Quiz Shukudai wo Wasuremashita, released on the Sega Saturn in 1996 in Japan. Over time, the SEGA Ages series grew to encompass enhanced ports of dozens of games across multiple systems. The series also made an appearance in the West with SEGA Ages: Volume 1, a collection of enhanced ports of Space Harrier, OutRun, and After Burner II, released in 1997 on the Sega Saturn. Now, SEGA Ages is being rebooted on the Nintendo Switch, delivering the most faithful ports of Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, and arcade games for the current generation. As you would expect from the retro geniuses at M2, these games will stay true to their original forms while incorporating new features that bring a refreshing twist to these classic titles' gameplay.

Virtua Racing and Wonder Boy: Monster Land are now available on the Nintendo Switch for $7.99 each!

SEGA Ages Virtua Racing takes the revered classic and delivers a dramatic overhaul with an improved framerate, a far greater draw distance, online matchmaking (and leaderboards), and a new Replay mechanic that didn’t exist in the original release. Not only that, but the game also supports up to 8-player simultaneous local multiplayer, so you can rekindle that arcade experience with your friends!

SEGA Ages Wonder Boy: Monster Land contains several notable improvements such as a “Power Up New Game” (New Game Plus) feature that can be enabled at any time, even if you haven’t beaten the game, allowing you to restart after a Game Over with the same gear. There are also 3 new challenge modes (Sphinx and Monster Castle time attacks plus the Fire Ball score attack), online leaderboards, a Replay function, and a “Money Hungry Mode.” This last item plays off a bug that existed in the arcade original where players would increase the value of any hidden gold by quickly shaking the joystick back and forth. While the unintended bug is enabled by default here, the “Money Hungry Mode” disables it for the truly hardcore!

About Virtua Racing

Take control of a formula one racing car and compete against the world’s best drivers in the first faithful reproduction of the arcade classic. Choose between the Normal Race mode that features four-to-five lap races, or put your endurance to the test by completing 20 laps in the Grand Prix Race. Your car’s performance is affected the longer you drive, so make sure you plan your pit stop strategy carefully so you can take the checkered flag!

About Wonder Boy: Monster Land

After the defeat of the evil king, the kingdom of Wonder Land was a paradise…for a time. The peace was broken when a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon struck without warning and took over Wonder Land with a swarm of evil, monstrous henchmen, turning the once-peaceful land into the utterly chaotic Monster Land. Realizing he is Wonder Land's last hope, Wonder Boy sets out on an incredible journey to rid the country of the monsters and defeat the "invincible" evil dragon.

Virtua Racing and Wonder Boy: Monster Land will be available individually on the Nintendo Switch eShop in the Americas and Europe on June 27, 2019 for $7.99 with commensurate European pricing.
