'Godhood' Available On Steam Early Access

by Rainier on July 11, 2019 @ 12:49 a.m. PDT

Godhood takes place in a vibrant, primal world where players take on the role of a newborn deity, developing their own religion from scratch, all while managing their followers and challenging any other gods that stand in their way.

In Godhood, players create their own religion by tending to their flock of disciples as a young god. Set in ancient lands and viewed from an isometric perspective, the player’s followers cannot be directly controlled but are influenced by the choices and direction of their god.

From cat worshipping to human sacrifices, Godhood will let players become a newborn deity and experiment with dozens of different dogmas as they create their own religion. As a divine leader they will have to set clear rules and guide their followers by defining what constitutes a virtue or vice, and what rituals to practice. However, prospective gods will soon learn that their worshippers come with a fair chunk of free will and that control over them isn’t total.

In a world where worship means everything, and the number of followers is directly related to the success of a deity, players have to prevent other gods from converting followers, while also increasing their own ranks by continuing the spread of their religion. This religious to and fro makes conflict inevitable and players will face their rivals in ritual combat known as Sacraments. These battles can only be won if players carefully prepare their most trusted worshippers in advance, using rituals to strengthen their faith.

Godhood has launched into Early Access on Steam and GOG (Windows/Mac).

“The time has come to finally set Godhood free in the wild,” said Rick Sorgdrager of Abbey Games. “And we couldn’t be happier to launch our new game into Early Access today. We’ve worked hard to get to this point: from the initial sketches and prototypes, to our Kickstarter and our closed Alpha. It’s been a long road, one we couldn’t have walked alone without the help from our dedicated community. This is only the start; expect much more exciting new content, new features, and new gods in the coming weeks and months!”

The Early Access launch of Godhood features four religious dogmas to mix and match, 13 unique classes of disciples, a large variety of abilities and relics, dozens of missions, and over 20 buildings to construct and customize. Abbey Games is committed to develop Godhood with the active support of the community and players while in Early Access, and expects to make frequent updates to their new game, including new content such as gods, beliefs and holy temples, as well as refining and enhancing the core gameplay experience.

Key Features:

  • Create your religion: Godhood lets players create the religion they wish to propagate. Creation is up to the player, and their choices will set the course for what type of deity they want to be.
  • Guide your disciples: Players define what is important for their followers, selecting virtues and vices, which guide them in how they live and what rituals they undertake. Through guidance, help disciples rise to become powerful prophets who train future generations, and carry the religion forward throughout the ages.
  • Literally play god: As a god, influence is imparted through the use of a wide range of abilities and powers. Rather than having direct control over them, disciples react to the actions of their god and act of their own accord. Deciding what rituals to enact or which monument to build is key to a prosperous society and devoted following.
  • Ritual combat: Other deities and religions battle for power and influence, leading to ritual combat with opposing gods. Known as ‘Sacraments’, players’ followers will need to prove their worth through the use of awe, persuasion, and brute force.
  • Colourful art style: Charming visuals with bright, hand-drawn qualities depict the new and unknown world of Godhood with a lush, isometric perspective.
  • Replayability: Powered by a deep simulation system, Godhood allows players to experiment with dozens of different religious combinations unlocking new secrets as they progress along a main storyline filled with battles, rituals, and challenging side quests.

Godhood is set to be released on PC in 2019.
