'Oddworld: Soulstorm' (ALL) Delayed Until Spring 2021 - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Dec. 10, 2020 @ 11:37 p.m. PST

Oddworld: Soulstorm picks up from Abe’s genesis and directly follows on from the overthrow of RuptureFarms and the liberation of his blighted workmates.

Witness Abe's horrifying conflict with a terrifying new machination.
A fresh narrative - a complete story retake inspired by our original tale.
A big visual and cinematic leap aiming to break new ground for Oddworld.
Intelligent new mechanics, twisted new devices enabling highly explosive deviousness.
A dark parable that tells an epic tale of a volatile society pushed to its limits.

Having defeated Molluck The Glukkon, his former boss and RuptureFarms’ meanest inhabitant, Abe finds himself - along with 300 newly emancipated Mudokons - without food, water or a place to call home. Stranded alone in the desert, they find solace in a strange new brew - a delicious drink that has insidious ramifications for their newfound freedom.

Oddworld: Soulstorm will continue to chew up the themes of environmentalism, capitalism, consumerism and addiction that critics and fans found so engaging in the "AAA Indie" release of Oddworld’s last pensive platformer, New ’n’ Tasty.

Revolutions start small but can gain traction quickly and Abe’s actions have not gone unnoticed.  The well-funded and powerful opposition is increasingly rising against him albeit in devious and disinforming ways.  In SOULSTORM, Abe will uncover a terrifying machination, one that threatens to annihilate any hope of his people’s potential freedom.  If Abe fails to conquer this challenge his people will never have a chance to be free.

Oddworld: Soulstorm, the bigger, badder, bolder action adventure platforming sequel is coming in spring 2021.

"Oddworld: Soulstorm is by far the biggest game that we have ever made, which is both exciting and nerve-racking.

Our team has been heads down working on Soulstorm to bring it to you as quickly as possible without sacrificing high quality. I am proud of them and the work they are creating.

I want to stress, Soulstorm is nearly done. Story and levels are all done. We are now focusing on getting new and existing Oddworld features balanced and bug squashing.

A Spring 2021 release gives us flexibility, time, and a little wiggle room to deliver Soulstorm to you.

Fortunately, all our partners have supported our decisions. We have a lot riding on this game and we want to release the best game possible.

We will know an exact date in early 2021 and we will share it with you as soon as we are 100% certain.

Sherry and I and the entire team thank you for sticking with us on our journey. Your support inspires us, and we cannot wait to share Soulstorm with you. It has been longer than expected, but we believe it will be worth it.

Thank you,

Lorne Lanning"

You can pre-purchase the PC version right now at Epic Games Store. PlayStation pre-orders will be announced later.

Oddworld: Soulstorm retains the core game play that fans have loved, while expanding with smart new features such as Scavenger's Economy System and Crafting in a way that is relevant to Abe as a character.  The game will feature leaderboards, trophies, and badges to extend the game’s possibilities and challenges. The game will be 10+ hours, but achievement hunters and leaderboard climbers will spend dozens more hours enjoying the game.

Key Features:

  • Action Adventure Platforming: Evolving the platforming genre by adding RPG-lite elements with player agency to play as they like, whether aggressively or passively.
  • Narrative: A dark storyline with a twisted sense of humor that shines a light on the ironies that exist in the human condition.
  • 2.9D: Epic environments with massive scale to explore by going into the world, rather than being limited to the traditional side scrolling platformer sense.
  • Quarma (think Karma): Quarma is a real time feedback feature that reflects your actions in the game and will influence Abe, his followers, his abilities, and your score throughout the game.
  • Scavenger’s Economy: Pickpocket enemies, loot lockers, sift through trash cans to acquire resources. Exchange them at vending machines to get products that give you more agency in how you chose to conquer the game’s many challenges.
  • Crafting: Use scavenged resources and vending machine products to craft items to use as weapons or tools against characters and obstacles.
  • Strength in Numbers: The more followers you save, the stronger the uprising becomes. Gift crafted items to followers. It’s up to you to decide whether they will be aggressive or passive.
  • Gameplay: A 2.9D action adventure platformer. Expected first time playthrough is estimated at 15 hours. Achievement hunters and perfectionists can easily play for dozens of hours.
  • Leaderboards: All levels offer a tallying system, leaderboards, achievements, and badges.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is coming to PS4 and PS5 (timed exclusive), and PC (Epic Games Store) in Spring 2021.
