As an employee of Kindred Aerospace, which proudly touts its rating as the “4th Best Interstellar Exploration Company,” players are dropped onto the uncharted planet AR-Y 26, deep in a fictitious, far-away corner of the universe.
Launched with high hopes but little equipment and no real plan, players are invited to explore, catalog alien flora and fauna and determine if this strange planet is fit for human habitation.
Unlimited lives got you down? Is the knowledge that you’ll just be reprinted taking the challenge out of exploration? Good news! We’ve got a game mode to fix that.
Some of you Explorers truly are gluttons for punishment! I mean, really. It’s not enough that we sent you across the universe in a shoddily-made, poorly-maintained, rusted out husk of a ship and provided you with none of the equipment you’d need for your mission or even THE FUEL TO GO HOME? Man of you seem to want this already deeply traumatic experience to be even harder?
Well, fine! We’ll give it to you even harder! Brace yourselves for the advent of Old Game Minus. With this soon to be released all-new game mode, you can once again experience the trials and tribulations of exploring AR-Y 26, this time with a limited pool of lives. Yeah, that’s right. Your ship is even crappier and will allow only three reprints. Your goal is to make your way to the final boss, beat it, and then find the needed fuel to return home.
And if you run out of lives? Too bad! Get lost! Coffee’s for closers! Your file is wiped and you can start over. Hard enough now?
To ease that pain just a little bit more, we’ve also hidden a few extra lives in the world, one per area. They’re going to look like Martin Tweed bobbleheads, because billionaires are better than us and we should thank them everyday for their generosity and mercy!
And since this is an “old school” mode, we’ve also hidden one special extra life for gamers who know the ultimate retro game secret.
Also, we’re going to add a timer. Don’t worry: It’s counting up, not down, so it shouldn’t increase the difficulty. I mean, it might if the constant reminder of time’s passage is enough to send you into an existential death spiral. That might make it harder. Otherwise it’s just a means for the speed-minded player to keep track of their progress as they strive to set a new PB.
If you don’t take photos, were you really there? Are you shooting your good side? To make your photo game the best it can be, we’ve added a bunch of new poses and filters to Photo Mode!
Now you can express yourself in more ways and look good doing it.
