Beyond Blue is set in the near future and has players probing the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, the lead on a newly formed research team that will use groundbreaking technologies to see, hear, and sense the ocean in a more meaningful way than has ever been attempted. The game will involve both a rich story and resource management, challenging the player to make high-stakes decisions and prioritize which objectives can be successfully achieved during the crew's expedition.
Embracing the same inclusive development process that was used to create Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna), E-Line's BAFTA award-winning game about Alaska Native culture, the company paired world class game makers with some of the field's leading ocean experts to craft an experience that reflects the awesome wonder and unbounded mystery that infuses our planet's beating blue heart.
E-Line Media celebrated Earth Day 2020 by giving livestream viewers an opportunity to ask scientists questions about Beyond Blue and an ocean of other topics.
During the stream, E-Line Media surprised everyone by revealing that Beyond Blue will launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One during the week of World Oceans Day, which happens on June 8th, 2020.
“We are extremely excited to share Beyond Blue with everyone,” said Michael Angst, CEO, E-Line Media, Creative Director for Beyond Blue. “We have taken care to craft a visual and audio experience that immerses players in the beauty of the ocean and the amazing creatures that inhabit it, while hopefully doing so with some interpretation and artistry.
Players will explore diverse environments ranging from a sun-dappled, oasis-like atoll down through the gauzy blue ‘twilight’ zone where only the faintest amount of light reaches to the midnight of the abyssal zone, where rarely seen creatures produce their own light in an environment otherwise devoid of light.”
The concept for the project grew from creative discussion between E-Line and BBC Studios during BBC's making of Blue Planet II, the groundbreaking nature series that has already reached millions of viewers around the world. The series highlights that there has never been a more crucial time to explore our remotest seas, and to examine what the future might hold for our blue planet.
Enabled by this partnership with BBC Studios, as they progress players will be able to unlock Ocean Insight videos that expand upon a moment of the game with stunning underwater footage from the Blue Planet II production, including never-before-seen footage. Players will also meet the inspiring real-world ocean researchers who are laying the foundation for the exciting future depicted in the game.
E-Line is joined in its funding of the project by impact investors who share in a mission to help build lasting connections between people and the ocean, including OceanX, an initiative of Dalio Philantrophies, and David Haas (a leading philanthropist supporting media for impact).
