'Jupiter Hell' Gets New Publisher, Early Access Update, Release Date

by Rainier on Feb. 22, 2021 @ 9:23 a.m. PST

Jupiter Hell is a turn-based sci-fi roguelike/RPG with modern 3D graphics.

Set on the moons of Jupiter, the game pits a lone space marine against overwhelming demonic forces. The player will rip and tear zombies, demons and unmentionable monstrosities, using classic weaponry such as shotguns, chainguns, railguns and the trusty chainsaw. Sounds familiar? It should! Jupiter Hell is the spiritual successor to the 2002’s freeware roguelike phenomenon - Doom, the Roguelike, later renamed to DRL for obvious copyright reasons.

All to the shine of CRT monitors and the tune of heavy metal!

Powered by the custom-built Nova Engine, the game takes the classic, turn-based roguelike gameplay and puts it in a detailed and dynamic 3D, 90s flavored sci-fi environment. Jupiter Hell stays true to the staple qualities of the roguelike genre: procedural level generation, providing endless possibilities for another run, character permadeath, and brutal, yet fair difficulty level. The players will die, learn from their mistakes, and proceed to make new ones in a new playthrough.

Distilled, hardcore gameplay, fast-paced challenge and limitless death all await! Welcome to Jupiter Hell.

Jupiter Hell developer ChaosForge is teaming up with Hyperstrange (Elderborn, Postal: Brain Damaged) on the final stretch to bring the game out of Early Access on August 5, 2021!

The announcement is backed up by the release of the game’s 0.9.7 version - one of the largest-scaled content updates to date - and a special week-long 20% off promo on Steam

A mega-corporation conducting mining operations across the Jovian moons has somehow opened up a gate to… somewhere else. A lone marine is now the only one who can stand against the demonic forces of Hell and shut the gate before they overwhelm the whole Solar System.

The game starts with the player, a lone marine, arriving at a base on Callisto and being confronted by demonically possessed former soldiers. The player will shoot, blast and chainsaw their way across the moons of Jupiter, discovering the secrets of corporate money-grabbers and ancient cults, before arriving at Dante Station, a mysterious structure in orbit above Jupiter’s Red Spot.

Jupiter Hell is built from the ground up on an entirely custom engine. It includes dynamic lighting, quick procedural composition, and most importantly an animation system which adapts to the speed of your keypresses, letting you play entirely at your own pace. The custom engine also gives us much greater flexibility in development than anything off the shelf.

Key Features:

  • Classic roguelike features of turn-based, grid-based gameplay, procedural levels and permadeath.
  • Modern look and feel, with 3D graphics, streamlined user interface, metal soundtrack and professional voice acting from Mark Meer (aka Commander Shepard of Mass Effect).
  • Varied and engaging procedural environments, with a focus on tactical interactions.
  • Purpose-built engine with adaptive animation speed to let players play as fast or slow as they like.
  • Varied enemies and challenging boss fights.
  • Tree-based character progression system.
  • Loot and weapons inspired by classic 90s shooters.
  • Advanced difficulty modes to provide the right level of challenge for even the most extreme players.

Currently available through Steam Early Access, Jupiter Hell is coming to PC (Steam) on August 5, 2021.
