'Empire of Ember' Early Access Update Adds New Features, Enhanced Visuals And Tweaked Mechanics

by Rainier on Aug. 10, 2021 @ 2:38 p.m. PDT

Empire of Ember is a first-person action-RPG featuring player-created cities, destructible environments, and procedurally-generated dungeons.

Empire of Ember is an action RPG rich in lore and fantasy filled with more than just magic and myth, with a narrative tied into the game's persistent world with a script by former Telltale Games lead writer Patrick Kevin Day.

Blending first-person ranged, melee, and magical combat, Empire of Ember also includes a light RTS strategic element, allowing players to unleash the might of an army of NPCs to fight alongside in hundred-unit battles.

The explorable nature of the game also helps drive the narrative, as players can delve into developer-created story stages in randomly generated overland maps across 4 biomes or traverse through procedurally-generated solo dungeons. Additionally, Empire of Ember’s city builder allows players to design, decorate and defend their own fully destructible 3D kingdoms that they can also explore in first person. More importantly, these player-created cities can be shared in an asynchronous multiplayer mode, in which players can download another player’s city and fight to sack it.

After five months on Steam early access, indie studio Poleaxe Games have released the first animation patch for Empire of Ember.

This first pass includes improved first-person animations for the different styles of combat: melee, bow, spell and staff attacks. One of the most notable changes is that you can now block your enemies’ attacks with a magical shield when using the melee archetype.

The main developer Kevin Jenkins has been able to introduce new features according to the feedback gathered thanks to Empire of Ember’s fans, and since the Steam Early Access release on March 31st has been making improvements accordingly. While further animation additions are planned for the future, the development will now focus on other fixes for the time being.

Key Features:

  • Fight
    • Use the environment to crush, trip, impale, or explode enemies.
    • Raise up fallen enemies and command the undead to fight on your behalf.
    • Fully destructible cities. Use catapults to fire from afar, or blast through the walls and lead your troops through the breach.
  • Command
    • Lead your army in first person, in battles of up to a hundred units.
    • Tactics matter. Order your men to hold the line with a shield wall while archers rain death from above. Teleport behind enemy lines to wreak havoc.
  • Build
    • Design, decorate, and defend your own fully destructible 3D city. Strategically place spawn points to rain fire from high towers while melee units defend the gates.
    • Integrated sharing. Download, destroy, and rate other players’ cities.
  • Rule
    • Make decisions that can change the story and lead to different game endings. Features a story written by Patrick Kevin Day, a former lead writer from Telltale Games.
    • Hold court and pass judgement on daily events in the lives of your subjects.

Empire of Ember is coming to PC (Steam) in 2021/2022.
