'The Waylanders' Reveals Post-Launch Development Roadmap

by Rainier on Feb. 28, 2022 @ 1:55 p.m. PST

The Waylanders is an RPG that will provide players an engaging narrative featuring impactful character development, unique companion romance options, and a deeply technical combat system.

A fantasy RPG inspired by beloved classics such as Dragon Age: Origins, Neverwinter Nights 2, and even a smidge of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (time travelling!), The Waylanders is a party-based experience set in the Celtic and Medieval eras featuring innovative and technical combat to make it stand out all on its own.

Real-time combat with a tactical pause option, The Waylanders can be played from the classic isometric, top-down view but can also be shifted into third person perspective. Featuring unique character creation and a massive 36 character classes based on six basic classes and 30 more advanced ones means every play style imaginable can be accommodated. Its most innovative offering, is the introduction of formations whereby characters will combine into offensive formations allowing for deep combat tactics and enabling players to play the game their own way.

In The Waylanders, you lead a party of 5 characters, utilizing over 800 different skills, to overcome challenges and defeat your enemies.

Gato Salvaje Studio has released a  post-launch roadmap for The Waylanders, outlining fixes for known issues that will be released in the coming weeks.

“The Waylanders is a story that our team has been working on for the last five years and we’re so happy to see it out in the world. We’re aware that the game launched with more issues than we’d realized and we’re working to correct that,” said studio co-founder and creative director Sergio Prieto. “Thank you to everyone in The Waylanders community who has reported a bug. We’re working as quickly as we can to make improvements to gameplay, animations, and translations, and we hope to have The Waylanders much improved soon.”

A hotfix released shortly after launch fixed mission critical issues including problems with later game quest markers as well as Direct3D fullscreen bugs and animation issues.

The next update, planned for early March, will add more fixes for missions with a focus on bugs found in main storyline and loyalty quests. Additional improvements will be made to medieval era cutscenes as well as fixes solving a bug that stops some companion torque scenes from triggering. Additional improvements will be included in this update solving problems with party selection, quest selection, some codexes not unlocking properly, and many small bug fixes.

Following the March update will be another in early April focusing on a variety of bug fixes, most notably gameplay tweaks and improvements to boss battles. The team plans to add new quests for Tiana and Lugaid in this update along with new Steam achievements for some of the final quests in The Waylanders

The final planned update, currently set for early May, will address game performance, especially in bigger medieval maps. Improvements to player progression and game balance along with revisions to text and translations will also be included in this update. The team also plans to review experience and loot earned during some quests at this time.

Once these updates are done, the Gato team plans to reassess reported issues in The Waylanders and make plans for future updates depending on known issues at the time.

Key Features:

  • Real time combat with tactical pause, character creation and 36 classes (6 basic and 30 advanced)
  • Played from top-down isometric perspective that can be shifted to third person perspective
  • Inspired by RPG classics Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2
  • 12 different combat formations (2 per class) where players fuse characters to provide varied and technical combat options
