'Insurmountable' v2.0 Update Will Add New Side Missions, Skills And More Story - Trailer

by Rainier on March 10, 2022 @ 1:42 p.m. PST

Insurmountable is a new adventure roguelike about climbing (and surviving) treacherous mountains and harsh environments.

Insurmountable tasks players with utilizing different strategic tactics and overcoming risky challenges with each run-through.

As the title suggests, this indie game is all about overcoming the insurmountable. Players must manage limited resources, find the optimal route, and face dangers to reach the top of the mountain. If killed by the elements, it's game over in roguelike fashion and the player has to face the challenge of the mountain all over again.

The deadly mountains in Insurmountable present players with extensive challenges. To successfully complete a run, a total of three mountains must be conquered, whereby the difficulty level increases from one mountain to the next and from one successful run to the next, over three difficulties: "Standard Mode", "Hard Mode", and "Insurmountable Mode". The highest difficulty level, "Insurmountable", does not forgive the slightest mistake, but on any difficulty level, a wrong decision can trigger a chain reaction that means the end of the respective run and a return to the first mountain. However, thanks to the procedurally generated mountains, no climb is the same as the previous one. The dynamic and ever-changing weather, different terrain, and the day-night cycle means that new hazards lurk around every corner.

Whether it's the lack of oxygen or energy, dwindling mental health, freezing winds, or attacking wildlife, in Insurmountable players must strategically think through each option to ensure their survival, find loot necessary for advancement, and ultimately conquer the mountain. The text-based events present players with real consequences; there are no second chances. Three individual characters with unique skill systems and special abilities provide different tactical approaches. Via the scoreboard, everyone can view their most successful runs and compete with their friends for the title of the best virtual climber.

Insurmountable will receive a major update when version 2.0 launches on April 14th, adding a completely new metagame with side missions and new skills, while also adds a brand new story for players to conquer.

Before 2.0, a single run consisted of players consecutively climbing three mountains in a row with the transition between them being seamless - players always kept items and upgrades. Once all three were conquered, the game was over.

In the 2.0 update, players can now complete the three mountains as “main missions” plus 10 to 12 “side missions”, returning to base after every single one - without the now mission-specific items and levels. Each mission carries rewards that strengthen the climber for the whole run. The base not only allows players to upgrade permanently, choose the next mission and prepare accordingly, it also offers dialogue that carries the narrative of the story. Since the side missions need to be completed to become strong enough to take on the main missions, the game length has also been increased.

Key Features of Version 2.0:

  • A Brand New Story - Gone are the individual stories. Now, the three characters find themselves in a time loop, caused by the research station which is now their base. They have to free themselves and find out more about the mysteries looming in the mountain range.
  • Base Camp - The baseis an almost entirely abandoned research facility in the mountain range. Here, players can choose their next mission, upgrade kit and skills, and decide on which items to bring.
  • Mountaineering Map -  Found in the base camp, the map indicates which missions are available, which ones are completed, and which ones are not yet unlocked.
  • Prepare Accordingly - Upgrades and preparing for missionsinclude collecting knowledge in different areas such as items, characters, terrain, and the environment. How much knowledge is received depends on the mission. Knowledge is essential to level up their respective areas (items, character skill trees, team upgrades).
  • Procedurally generated maps are a big part of the 2.0 update as side missions will rely heavily on this feature, allowing players to climb a wider variety of mountains.
  • New Feature - Tracking is a new goal that players have to find and reach in order to clear a mission.
  • The new and improved tutorial will be context-based and offer new players information according to their progress.
  • Balancing & In-Game Skills have been completely reworked.

On April 14, 2022, Insurmountable will also be available on GOG and the Epic Game Store.

Key Features:

  • no two climbs are alike
  • procedurally generated mountains
  • dynamic world with different weather effects
  • hundreds of events with ever-changing outcomes
  • strategic gameplay in path finding, stat and equipment management
  • 3 characters with different abilities

Insurmountable is available PC (Steam) at €19.99 / $19.99 / £19.99. A console release for PlayStation 4/5 and Xbox One X/S will follow later, while a Nintendo Switch version is being considered.
