'Redfall' Devs Discuss Story, Vampires, Characters, Weapons And Much More - Trailer

Redfall is a co-op, open-world, first-person shooter where up to four players face off against a legion of vampires that have overtaken the once-quaint island town of Redfall.

Redfall is a co-op, open-world, first-person shooter from Arkane Austin. Play it solo or in co-op with up to four players to face off against a legion of vampires that have overtaken the once-quaint island town of Redfall. Choose your path across the island and through the vampire masses as you discover what caused this plague of bloodsuckers, and then put an end to the threat. Pick from a roster of heroes with distinct skills and gear them up with customizable weaponry found throughout the island. Do whatever it takes to build the perfect team of vampire slayers.

Redfall used to be a bustling, beautiful island community. It had everything a coastal town in Massachusetts should have: a lighthouse, a lobster shack, a boardwalk… There’s a whole wide-open world to see in Redfall, with new mysteries (and threats) in every nook and cranny. From cultist strongholds and twisted psychic spaces called Nests, you’ll find plenty of danger on the island of Redfall.

When the vampires took over, they blocked out the sun, pushed back the tides, and effectively walled off the island from the rest of society, trapping everyone who remained. Now vampires rule the town by night and the human cultists who worship them patrol the streets by day. Not too many people venturing out of safety to check out the boardwalk these days, and forget about getting fresh lobster.

Vamps aren’t the only threat you’ll need to be on the lookout for. They’ve got a small army of dedicated cultists that worship them, and they’re ready to shoot on sight. While not quite as dangerous as their bloodsucking overlords, cultists are well-armed and ready to die for the vampires. They’ve established bases and patrol routes all over the island, so keep your head on a swivel.

Enter: You.

Today at QuakeCon, four team members from Arkane Austin sat down to talk about their upcoming game Redfall.

Studio Director Harvey Smith, Creative Director Ricardo Bare, Art Director Karen Segars and Lead Producer Aaron Carter took a deeper look at the story of Redfall, the vampires, the characters, the weapons and much more in this 20-minute chat.

In Redfall, you'll choose from a lineup of unconventional heroes, each with their own unique abilities and specialized weaponry, and face off against the bloodsucking legions threatening the island.

Go solo for a stealthier, more exploratory experience, or team up with up to three other players for some friendly vampire-hunting. “A huge emphasis for Redfall has been the solo experience, in keeping with Arkane’s passions,” explains Studio/Creative Director Harvey Smith. “Redfall is an open world game, but it can be soloed with any of the heroes. The pace becomes more exploratory; you can use recon and stealth to gather info on encounters and avoid enemies or get the drop on them.”

Whereas playing solo forces you to rely solely on yourself, forming a squad allows you to combine strengths with other players and test out strategies only available when you’re part of a team. And, of course, you can change things up at any time. With a seamless blend of single and multiplayer, Redfall gives you the freedom to play with whoever you want. How you choose to face the darkness is up to you.

You’ll find plenty of weapons as you explore Redfall. Some will be handcrafted by survivors, pieced together using available materials, and others might be high-grade military equipment. Collect, upgrade, and build up your stash of gear. You never know when you might want to try something new.

Even with the weapons and abilities at your disposal, you’ll still want to use your brain. Guns blazing can be a viable solution to the vampire problem, but make sure you have the right gear for the occasion, especially if you’re traveling alone. Using Jacob’s raven to do some scouting or relying on your own stealthy skills is a great way to ensure you’re never unprepared for the things that go bump in the night.

Meet the Squad

Redfall features a rich campaign that explores not only the story of the island and the creatures plaguing its streets, but the stories of our four heroes as well.

  • Layla Ellison – She may be the youngest member of the team, but there isn't much she can't handle with her wits and wildly powerful telekinetic abilities.
  • Jacob Boyer – Jacob is an ex-military sharpshooter with a penchant for dark clothing and a mysterious vampiric eye. If you need to find him on the field, look for his spectral raven circling overhead. Jacob won't be far away.
  • Remi de la Rosa – Always spotted with her robotic compatriot, Bribón, Remi lives on the frontlines of conflict, using her brilliant mind and strong sense of empathy to protect her loved ones and help those in need around the world.
  • Devinder Crousley – Inventor and internet-famous paranormal investigator, Devinder is ready to prove to the world that vampires are real – but he's going to need to survive them first.

Redfall is coming to Xbox X|S and PC in 2023.
