'Wanted: Dead' Shows Off Its Finisher Combo Mechanics - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Jan. 19, 2023 @ 3:40 p.m. PST

Featuring spectacular melee combat and exciting gunplay, Wanted: Dead is set in a dark and dangerous version of sci-fi Hong Kong where you will need sharpened skills to survive.

Players take on the role of Lt. Hannah Stone, stepping into a dark and dangerous vision of cyberpunk Hong Kong as leader of the “Zombie Squad”, an elite team who work outside the purview of the traditional police force. You will fall in love with Stone’s elite combat skills that combine style and substance, delivering cool slow-motion sequences, the ability to issue orders to teammates and a limb severing mechanic that changes enemy attack patterns.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, a deep combat system will give you the opportunity to take on enemies up-close and personal, or engage with guns from a distance, with cool slow-motion sequences, and a limb-severing mechanic that changes enemy attack patterns adding style and substance to combat encounters.

Wanted: Dead is a high-octane third-person action game that seamlessly mixes swordplay with gun combat. Developed by talent that created Ninja Gaiden, players should expect that series’ hardcore DNA to shine through, with intelligent enemies pushing you to master the game’s systems. Wanted: Dead forces players to learn how to use combos, parries and the other tools it gives you to full effect to overcome the inevitable ass-kickings the game will be dishing out. The reward will be aesthetically pleasing bouts of blood and violence and the sense of satisfaction that comes with becoming a flawless fighting machine.

In this new trailer, discover all there is to know about Wanted: Dead’s stylish finisher mechanics as well as their importance for gameplay.

Wanted: Dead is not for the faint of heart, featuring over 50 savage and unique finisher moves that took over 100 hours of motion capture and a dedicated group of stuntmen to assemble.

Takedowns in Wanted: Dead are explosive in variety and feature situational kills, environmental hazards and unique takedowns specific to enemy types. These kills provide bloodthirsty visuals to the onslaught while also serving a vital tactical purpose through replenishing lost health. It’s not as easy as it may appear though, players will come to learn that executing takedowns and finisher moves are essential for progression and will make certain encounters beatable.

Unlocked very early on in the game is Hannah’s ultimate attack. This slick attack will help to stack up staggered enemies, dealing devastating chain finishers that can effectively take down an entire room of enemies. Finishing strikes work by each enemy having an invisible stamina bar (melee enemies typically have more stamina than ranged fighters). As the player damages enemies, this stamina bar depletes slowly and once their stamina falls to zero the enemy enters a staggered animation and can be executed by the player. Another way to attain a finisher is by using last-moment parries with a sword or side arm which automatically drains the enemy's stamina, providing the perfect opening for a kill.

Wanted: Dead uses a smart system of triggering finishing animations. First, the algorithm looks for the possibility of an environmental kill or a situational kill like using an enemy's own weapon against them. Then the algorithm ensures that the player has a strong visual variety by constantly moving and rotating around enemies to achieve epic takedowns. These finisher moves are not only visceral and breathtaking, but they also serve a combat purpose making for some truly action-packed gameplay.

“We had a lot of fun creating these unique finisher combos in Wanted: Dead and can’t wait for players to create some chaos on Valentine’s Day,” said  Sergei Kolobashkin, founder and Creative Director at 110 Industries. “Stay in the action and keep an eye out for more Wanted: Dead Explained videos coming soon!”

Imprisoned as one of the losing combatants in a global war, Lt. Hannah Stone is given one final chance to escape her imprisonment as she takes charge of an elite team who work outside the purview of the traditional police force known as “Zombie Squad”. Taking on the role of Hannah, players will step into a retro-cyberpunk vision of Hong Kong where synthetic workers and advanced weaponry exists alongside VHS tapes and cars that look like they are straight out of the 90s.

Wanted: Dead’s world is one dominated by a single company: Dauer Synthetics. Lt. Stone and her team soon find themselves embroiled in the shady dealings and underhand politics that swirl around the company that controls the world. Who is the mysterious mercenary outfit that attacks them? What do they want? And how will the world respond when Dauer Synthetics leaves a power vacuum no one could have anticipated.

Among the talented team working on the game's finessed combat systems are developers that previously worked on Ninja Gaiden and the Dead or Alive series.

Wanted: Dead is coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on February 14, 2023.
