'Aeterna Noctis' Reveals More Pit of the Damned DLC Details, Launch Window - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Jan. 31, 2023 @ 1:51 a.m. PST

Aeterna Noctis is a 2D-metroidvania game that tells the story of the King of Darkness and the Queen of Light.

They are both cursed to fight each other eternally and even death could not free them from their destiny since they have been granted the gift of immortality. Players will experience this never-ending conflict through 16 challenging levels, each of them with its own flair, facing more than 100 different enemies, defeating more than 20 powerful final bosses (some of them are highlighted in this new trailer) and overcoming all kinds of challenging puzzles.

One of the most important features revealed during the extended gameplay was the leveling system. Aeterna Noctis has a skill tree where the player chooses the upgrades for the King of Darkness through three separate paths: melee combat, survival attributes and magic abilities.

Each one of these ramifications allows a deep degree of specialization but at the same time, are not mutually exclusive. Players are free to upgrade their character as they want.

Spanish development studio Aeternum Game Studios announced that the first playable DLC for Aeterna Noctis, Pit of the Damned, is scheduled for early 2023 and it will take us to explore a new area full of new challenges, new enemies, and, of course, a new and fearsome final boss.

Spanish development studio Aeternum Game Studios just revealed new details about the long-awaited DLC for its Metroidvania game Aeterna Noctis. Almost two months have passed since the studio confirmed that they are working on the "Pit of the Damned", the first DLC for Aeterna Noctis, an additional content that will feature interesting new gameplay features.

The development team has revealed what will be the new official cover for Aeterna Noctis on the occasion of the imminent DLC. It shows their majesties The King of Darkness, sword in hand, and the Queen of Light in a much more grim atmosphere than in the original cover. In the centre, separating both characters, stands out the presence of a mysterious shape wrapped in a chrysalis. The Aeterna Noctis logo itself has been modified, including the name of the expected DLC. "It is the most effective way to make it clear that this DLC will not only be free, but it will also be fully integrated into the gameplay mechanics and story of Aeterna Noctis", the studio says.

In addition to this cover (which demands to be your new wallpaper), a new gameplay of one of the new features of this highly anticipated expansion has also been revealed: the time trials. The video shows the King of Darkness overcoming a challenging sequence of puzzles and platforms in an environment that we didn't see before. This addition will please the most demanding players. The Aeterna Noctis DLC will be available for free and will have a simultaneous release on PC and consoles, and it is confirmed that the release window will be between April and June of this year.

The reason for such ambiguity about the release date? The possible incorporation of multiplayer and multiplatform scoreboard functions. From the offices of Aeternum Game Studios, they assure that the entire development team is working hard to make the time trials allow players to compete against each other, stand out among the world statistics and push themselves to achieve the best score. Due to the efforts they are making in this regard, they have only been able to confirm that it will be sometime around the stated date without specifying it.

The dev team seems to be working at a good pace. In a matter of a few months, the DLC will be available for free to everyone who already owns a copy of Aeterna Noctis, both on PC and Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. At the same time, the Pit of the Damned will become an integrated part of the base game for all new players. It is more than likely that during the next few weeks, Aeternum Game Studios will reveal new details about this highly anticipated DLC. 2023 promises to be a great year for the company and the Aeterna Universe, thanks to the release of the Pit of the Damned and the multiplatform launch later this year of Summum Aeterna, the prequel to Aeterna Noctis in Roguelite format.

This DLC will be released simultaneously on PC and PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles.

Key Features:

  • Experience a metroidvania with a challenging difficulty. Easy to leanr, but hard to master as you gain experience and unlock new skills.
  • Explore the mysterious lands of Aeterna in a non-linear way. You are always the one to choose your next challenge. All the levels are designed to fully exploit the movement skills of the characters, opening multiple ways to overcome each challenge.
  • Enjoy a clean and fluid gameplay designed and polished to achieve a system that responds to 100% of the actions regardless of the speed and conditions in which they are executed.
  • Immerse in a deep and beautiful story. Aeterna Noctis is not just about puzzles and platforms. It is also filled with epic moments and unexpected twists that will captivate even the most experienced of players.
