'Summum Aeterna' Early Access Update Adds New World/Areas, Boss Fight, Features And More - Trailer

by Rainier on Feb. 28, 2023 @ 8:53 a.m. PST

Summum Aeterna is a roguelite game that combines dungeon crawler mechanics with fast-paced combat and a unique 2D art style.

Summum Aeterna is a roguelite featuring frantic action without losing the artistic essence of the Aeterna world.

Summum Aeterna is a prequel to the Metroidvania Aeterna Noctis, where we will take control of the King of Darkness during his bloodiest and most chaotic time. Incredible combat and a frenetic pace of pure action will accompany us in this new adventure which takes place thousands of years before the events in Aeterna Noctis.

Taking the role of the King of Darkness, a mighty, powerful, and, why not, attractive warlord condemned to eternal life, you'll explore uncharted dungeons populated with treasures, traps, hordes of enemies, and powerful bosses.

Descend into the most dangerous depths of Aeterna and fight your way to the end of each dungeon... If you can!

With the arrival of "Ragnarök", there are already six major updates available for the prequel to the acclaimed Aeterna Noctis, and the latest brings a challenge only suitable to the most demanding players.

Summum Aeterna receives this patch following its roadmap for 2023, this time adding a new world that includes 2 new areas crowned by a confrontation against a new final boss that will put your skills to the test. The "Ragnarök" update also adds new features to the King of Darkness arsenal.

The very name of the patch makes the nature of its content clear. The developers have called the new world "Hyperborea", the land beyond the north, a nordic setting that will take the King of Darkness to explore a magnificent landscape of glaciers, snowy forests and ice caves. This new world is divided into 2 areas, the Fjord Coast and Odin's Bastion, adding a greater variety of settings to a title that has not stopped growing in content since its Early Access began last summer.

From the studio offices, they warn us not to be fooled by the beauty of the settings, since there are many dangers and challenges that await us in the new update for Summum Aeterna. Every new world brings a roster of new enemies that will make things very difficult for his dark majesty. Both regions of Hyperborea are populated by 9 new enemies: from warriors skilled in the art of close combat to all kinds of creatures based on Nordic folklore. The design of these enemies is inspired by the mythology of the ancient Vikings and each of these new rivals offers a unique behavior that will force the player to adapt to each fight without blinking. Otherwise, they will suffer the humiliation of being defeated.

Protecting these inhospitable lands is the new final boss included in the update... Or, rather, the 3 new final bosses: Frindala, Sveneka and Astrida, known as "Defenders of Valhalla". These warriors consider immortality an offense against Odin's work, so the presence of the King of Darkness in their domain is intolerable. 3 against 1? Then, it's a fair fight, you may be thinking. The combat against this trio of valkyries promises large doses of action, something the development team is used to.

The combat formula in Summum Aeterna is intuitive, frenetic, and constantly evolving. Within the playable content included in the "Ragnarök" update we find 6 new weapon ascensions. Let's remember, this is the new mechanic that allows players to unleash the absolute power of the arsenal. With this, not only are the King of Darkness' combat options expanded but also interesting dialogues with NPCs and missions that we must complete to get access to the ascension diagrams.

Following the Summum Aeterna roadmap for 2023, the next big update will arrive in April, and everything indicates that it will do so with interesting news.

Key Features:

  • Roguelite vibes: The King of Darkness may be immortal... But he can still be defeated. You will start your adventure over and over again, that's how this kind of games works, right? Don't panic, even if you're defeated, you still keep some of the stuff and upgrades you earned the last time you lived... Some of them, at least.
  • Seed mechanic: Summum Aeterna includes an original feature never seen before in the genre, the seeds... Each one generates a unique dungeon with different enemy behavior, rewards, random encounters, and even a larger map size, depending on its attributes and rareness.
  • Brutal fast-paced combat: The key to surviving in Summum Aeterna is killing every single living (or not, depending on the enemy) being you encounter. How to achieve that? Well, your play as a cursed monarch so your weapons were crafted for a king! Show no mercy, use your swords, shields, pistols, and scythes to make them beg for their miserable lives before they do the same with you...
  • Rareness is a virtue: Every weapon, seed, and gem in Summum Aeterna has a rareness level: Common, Infrequent, Strange, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic. The higher the rarity of an item, the more benefits. More level means bigger dangers and challenges, but higher rareness too!
  • Custom adventures: In Summum Aeterna you can define your own adventure. Each completed dungeon will give you lots of rewards, including seed genes. Thanks to the seed mechanic, you can personalize the world attributes, enemy stats, and conditions by combining different genes... Each dungeon will be different from the last!
  • Beautiful art style: Each asset, enemy, NPC, and animation has been hand-drawn using traditional 2d techniques... Everything you see in Summum Aeterna, from the smallest chest to the most colossal boss, has countless hours of hard drawing work. The visuals speak for themselves, the game looks amazing!

Currentrly available through Steam Early Access, Summum Aeterna is coming to Ninitendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam) in late 2023.
