'Last Epoch' Runes of Power Early Access Update Will Add Runemaster Class - Trailer

by Rainier on Aug. 22, 2023 @ 9:00 p.m. PDT

Last Epoch is an online action RPG that combines time travel, deep character customization, crafting, and an engrossing loot system that guarantees endless replayability.

Lost to the Void long ago, your world had ceded to its destruction. But now, you have found a way to save your world from this dark fate. Become the Traveler and journey through the different climatic moments in Eterra’s history. Fight the oppression of the Immortal Empire, stand your ground against the gods and their war, be witness to the untouched beauty of the world ignorant of humanity – and most importantly, discover the secret of the Void and the true nature of fate.

You start your adventure by choosing one of five classes: Knight, Mage, Rogue, Primalist, or Acolyte, and soon evolve into one of ten mastery classes: Beastmaster, Bladedancer, Void Knight, Paladin, Sorcerer, Spellblade, Marksman, Druid, Necromancer and Warlock. Hacking and slashing your way through different eras, it is up to you to save Eterra from The Void. And of course, collect as much loot as possible.

The Last Epoch skill specialization trees offer the customization essential to ARPGs, while separating decisions to avoid overloading the player with too many choices at once. Last Epoch is designed fundamentally to be easy to learn, but hard to master.

Eleventh Hour Games revealed details of the next major Runes of Power update to Last Epoch, going live on September 7, 2023.

Steam Early Access Release v0.9.2 will include the addition of the Runemaster, an all-new Mastery Class for the Mage – and the most robust and customizable character class in any ARPG on the market.

Other new features coming in the v0.9.2 release include support for eight additional languages, a new type of random event called Rune Prisons, and additional content such as new monsters, new unique items, and quest updates. Eleventh Hour also confirmed that the 1.0 launch is on track for late 2023.

“EHG and Last Epoch started from a Reddit post I made in May of 2017, soliciting input from the /gamedev Subreddit community to ‘help design the perfect ARPG,’” said Eleventh Hour founder, CEO, and game director Judd “Moxjet200” Cobler. “From the beginning, we wanted to create a different kind of studio that actually involved the player base in fundamental design decisions. It’s fair to say that the 800,000+ gamers who’ve purchased Last Epoch have enjoyed unprecedented levels of communication and collaboration with us.”

The Runemaster, the third and final Mastery Class for the Mage, truly pushes the boundaries of the ARPG genre in terms of customization and strategic builds. The Runemaster’s signature ability, “Runic Invocation,” generates one elemental rune each time a player casts an elemental spell (among more than 15 fire, lightning, and cold spells available in the Mage class). The order and types of runes generated determines which of 40 different spells will be unleashed upon activation. And as with every skill in Last Epoch, Runic Invocation also has its own skill tree with dozens of customizable nodes to shape the skill to any play style and character build.

“The Runemaster offers more skill options and diversity in the Runic Invocation ability alone than some ARPGs do in an entire character class,” noted Mike Weicker, Senior Developer on Last Epoch. “We’ve been having a ton of fun playtesting Runemaster these past few months, and can’t wait to see how the players react.”

Other new features and functionality coming in the 0.9.2 update include:

  • Localization: In addition to English, the game will be available in Chinese, French, German, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
  • New In-game Event Type: The Rune Prison, a side quest that will appear randomly throughout both Last Epoch’s main campaign and endgame system, involves freeing an imprisoned mage who becomes a deadly foe. Vanquish this corrupted conjurer for a chance to gain new “experimental” affixes (item buffs) found nowhere else in the game.
  • Additional New Content: Dozens of new monsters, quest updates, and unique items and more.

The Runes of Power update will be previewed via playable demo in Eleventh Hour’s booths in the Business [Hall 2.1, Booth C-041] and Entertainment [Hall 10.1, Booth B-088] pavilions at Gamescom all this week.

Key Features

  • Engrossing character customization through a unique skill and passive system
  • Randomized loot including unique, set, and legendary items
  • Emphasis on a world and story that can be completely explored in four eras of time
  • Endless replayability through multiple end-game systems
  • 5 classes that can each master into 2 unique subclasses
  • Team up with up to four other players to take on swarms of enemies and fierce bosses, connect with them to trade epic loot, or challenge them in glorious combat! Go offline and travel the various times of Eterra alone with only your strength to rely on. Either way, Last Epoch is doing online play right with server-side hosting designed to dissuade cheating and exploits, tentative plans for LAN multi-player options, and a variety of community-focused features such as lobbies, guilds, trading, seasons, ladders, and chat channels.

Last Epoch is coming to PC (Steam) in late 2023.
