The first-person dungeon exploration game, created with a passion and strongly inspired by Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore and Ultima Underworld, is Almost Human's first title and it packs together over 30 years of combined game development experience of the four man team.
A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captivators, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level. The game brings back the old-school challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be.
Developer Almost Human is proud to announce the arrival of Legend of Grimrock on Nintendo Switch.
Scheduled for release on Nintendo eShop on January 15th, 2024, this launch marks an exciting expansion of the game's reach.
The Nintendo Switch port of the game preserves the original dungeon-crawling adventure while introducing an overhauled user interface. Optimized for playing with a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pair, this version is perfect for playing on the couch or on the go.
Antti Tiihonen, one of the co-founders of Almost Human Ltd., shares insight into the decision-making process behind the port: "All of us at Almost Human have had other things to do besides Legend of Grimrock in recent years so why should we do a port of a game that's almost 11 years old already? The idea of the port arose when our programmer, Petri Häkkinen, had a Nintendo Switch developer kit and he thought it would be a fun and educational side project to get the game running on our favorite console platform. Most of our decisions aren't driven by business development plans or market analysis and this one was no exception since we did the project simply because it was enjoyable for us. We anticipate this release will rekindle the excitement of many of the old fans of the game and we hope some new adventurers will discover the delights of old school dungeon crawling too."Since its inception, the game has been ported to Mac, Linux, and iOS. A sequel, Legend of Grimrock 2, was released in 2014. With a well over 1.5 million units sold in total, both games have solidified their position as modern classics in the first-person dungeon-crawling role-playing game genre.
Currently available for PC (Steam), Legend of Grimrock is coming to Nintendo Switch on January 15, 2024.
