Stronghold: Definitive Edition’s first substantial gameplay update drops on Steam on February 13, 2024.
A simultaneous launch of free content and paid DLC, the Winter Update will release for free, while the game’s first DLC retails for $2.99/£2.49/€2.99.
“2023 was a hell of a year here at Firefly,” said Chief Marketing Officer Nick Tannahill. “With hundreds of thousands of you playing Stronghold: Definitive Edition and a huge wave of positivity and support, Stronghold and its wonderful community feels like it’s back in a big way and for that - thank you. Whether you left us a review on Steam, gave us paragraphs upon paragraphs of feedback or just said ‘Hey buddy. Well done. You deserve double rations!’, the vibes since launch have been amazing and have spurred us on to do bigger and better things with Stronghold going forward.”
Firefly Studios intends to support Stronghold: Definitive Edition with considerable paid and free post-launch content, in the form of two major updates. The aim of each is to offer fresh missions, created by veteran devs for players who want to challenge their two decades of Stronghold experience. Taking onboard player feedback through a demo survey and reflective of the cost of the full game, each DLC will be priced at $2.99/£2.49/€2.99.
Together with a host of fixes and improvements, the first of these planned DLC packages, the Winter Update, will feature the new Swine’s Bay DLC narrative campaign,, which follows the events of the main game and is narrated by returning series actor Christopher Kent. In Swine’s Bay, players are pushed through seven ruthless military combat scenarios across original maps as they seek to retrieve the Jewel of the North from the clutches of the infamous slaver Captain Hogsfoot.
Releasing alongside this DLC, the free update will add a second economic campaign, voiced by another returning Stronghold actor Jay Simon. These missions are designed to test players’ strategic skills beyond the warfront, with a series of intricate resource production and management challenges. Kingdoms may be crushed by warriors, but they can only be raised by those with the vision to build.
Looking forward to the future of the studio in 2024 and beyond, Firefly is actively engaged in a number of announced and unannounced games, the most prominent of which is the as of yet untitled ‘Stronghold Unreal’ project, built using the industry-leading tools of Unreal Engine 5. Needless to say, witnessing the love for mechanically deep, passionately made strategy games like Stronghold: Definitive Edition has lit a fire under the studio and the team can’t wait to share more
Stronghold: Definitive Edition features the original game’s classic military and economic campaigns, together with an entirely new 14 mission narrative campaign designed by Firefly Studios founders Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette. This is alongside extra single player content in the form of a 10 mission ‘Castle Trail’, which sees players either defend or besiege historical castles such as Warwick, Dunnottar and Marksburg.
Exclusive to the definitive edition, this new 14 mission campaign sees players march across the devastated English hinterland in search of Sir Longarm's captured kin, before venturing beyond the story in a challenging new historical 'Castle Trail' of 10 unique scenarios.
In addition to a host of technical enhancements and player-requested quality of life improvements, Stronghold: Definitive Edition will allow fans old and new to customise their experience with individual settings for many of their preferred game features and controls. Beyond this and fresh single player content, players will also weave new gallant tales of victory by picking a fight online with full Steam multiplayer support. Alternatively designing their own fiendishly challenging maps via Steam Workshop or downloading hundreds of player creations made during the game’s rich 20 year legacy.
