'The Outlast Trials' Project Breach Update Arrives Next Week, Adds New Trial, Story, Map, Challenges And More - Trailer

by Rainier on Dec. 6, 2024 @ 9:10 a.m. PST

The Outlast Trials is a survival-horror game you can play by yourself or with other players online. You'll have to survive the twisted, sadistic and bizarre experiments of the Murkoff Corporation, alone or in a group up to four players.

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game series developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. Critically acclaimed for its immersive atmosphere, sound design and full-frontal scares, the series soon became the leading horror game experience of its generation. The rules of the Outlast universe are simple – run, hide or die trying.

Outlast, the original release, begins with an intriguing anonymous tip that leads you to explore the dark heart of Mount Massive Asylum, home to the secret experiments of the Murkoff Corporation. Whistleblower, the DLC continuation, tells the backstory to the atrocities found in Outlast and stretches past the events of the first game to show the final bloody chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story. Outlast 2 places you deep in the wilderness where you discover the residents of Temple Gate and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do.

While not a direct sequel to the other critically acclaimed Outlast titles in the series, The Outlast Trials will be set in the same thrilling universe: more precisely, right in the middle of the Cold War era where players take on the role of test subjects abducted by the shadowy Murkoff Corporation.

Developer Red Barrels revealed a new trailer for The Outlast Trials, teasing the upcoming Project Breach update which will bring an exciting addition: Amelia, an escaped test subject now turned against Murkoff, voiced by Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal, Mary Kills People & Wonderfalls).

Project Breach will introduce Amelia’s story, along with a brand new trial, a new environment, a new member of the Ex-Pop, a new jammer Rig, a new release, and more when it launches December 10, 2024.

Despite the concerns about Amelia’s escape, Easterman pushes forward with new experiments, including the new Story Trial, “Pleasure the Prosecutor” in the new map, Downtown. Players must navigate Franco’s twisted cabaret, turning his devious theater against itself. Meanwhile, Murkoff Corporation ensures Reagents stay focused on their trials with new content, discouraging distractions or thoughts of escape.

A NEW HUNT BEGINS

Set in the 1950s, The Outlast Trials chronicles the sinister experiments of the Murkoff Corporation, a malevolent organization exploiting vulnerable individuals under the pretense of offering a better life. Reagents, lured by false promises, are abducted and subjected to horrifying psychological and physical trials designed to strip away their identities.

Trapped in a nightmarish facility filled with harrowing tests and terrifying Prime Assets such as Mother Gooseberry, Sergeant Leland Coyan, and Franco "Il Bambino" Barbi, survival seems impossible—let alone the thought of dismantling Murkoff’s experiments. But, someone has survived, and they have escaped… But why haven’t they left?

From within the walls of Murkoff’s facility, someone with a thirst for revenge lurks in the shadows. For the first time, Reagents will have a chance at a real possible escape. The staff at Sinyala should be on high alert.

As revealed in a new chapter of The Murkoff Collections (available for free here), Amelia joined Murkoff’s program deliberately, searching for another Reagent. Fueled by grief, fury, and conviction, she’s determined to bring down Easterman and destroy the Sinyala Facility.

“Reagents within The Outlast Trials have always been forced to be solely reactive, barely staying alive. Run, hide, survive, repeat. It’s this hopeless cycle that successfully strips participants of their morality and agency. With this latest update, we wanted to offer Reagents some form of solace, a chance at a collaborative revolt. Amelia is the lightning rod that will hopefully bring this plan to life, working behind the scenes on a mass exodus. She’ll do anything to tilt the scales, so long as she doesn’t get captured trying.” -Jonathan Morrell, Narrative Designer for The Outlast Trials.

In addition to Amelia’s storyline, Project Breach introduces:

  • A new trial: Pleasure the Prosecutor
  • A new map: Downtown
  • New MK-Challenges:
    • Reunite the Family: The nuclear family is the societal ideal. Release the orphan from the shackles of the state and reunite him with mother and father.
    • Deface the Futtermans: Childhood memories are the stagnation that impede your growth. Put away the childish things that clutter your mind.
  • A new rig: The Jammer
  • A new ending set in The Republic of Congo
  • A limited-time holiday event: Winter Kills

Imprisoned in a secret Murkoff facility, players will be thrust into a series of physical and mental ordeals, tormented by iconic characters, and challenged alone or in teams to survive with their sanity intact. In a world of distrust, fear, and violence, your morals will be challenged, your endurance tested, and your sanity crushed. All in the name of progress, science, and profit.

The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors of the trials by themselves or cooperate with up to three other test subjects. After all, it's always better to shit your pants with some friends!

The Outlast Trials is a terrifying game set in the same universe as the previous titles, available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam / Epic Games Store).
