'Clanfolk' Early Access Update Adds Beavers, New Negotiation System And More

by Rainier on April 21, 2024 @ 12:17 p.m. PDT

Inspired by Prison Architect and Rimworld, Clanfolk is a medieval Scottish colony sim offers a harsh lesson in survival.

Clanfolk is intentionally challenging and is designed to test players as winter approaches. Food will initially be plentiful and the nights warm until the seasons change and resources begin to dwindle. With procedurally generated maps, players will need to find the perfect location to put down roots if their Clan is to thrive.

Each member of your Clan has their own behavior traits that directly impacts how each character lives their life in your colony. Some will be afraid of the dark, meaning that bedrooms should be well lit to get better sleep, while others will have a high metabolism so they’ll eat more food but also work and move faster. Managing this, alongside the maintenance of your homestead, is key to not only surviving but also building strong relations with neighboring Clans.

With fully simulated weather conditions and seasons, each day in the Scottish highlands is unique. As you clear the land and build your homestead exactly how you choose you’ll need to juggle a complex hierarchy of needs that governs how your Clanfolk live their lives. This will ultimately determine whether you last through the winter. Played across generations, from birth until death, Clanfolk’s depth and scope is vast, granting players complete control over their experience and how they manage their survival.

Will you survive the winter?

Hooded Horse is excited to share that its highlands-themed colony sim Clanfolk has received a major Early Access content update that will shake up player expectations and change the dynamics of the clan forevermore.

From the complex negotiation system to the new map generation tech and beyond, the clanfolk will never be the same. Developer MinMax Games has created beautiful new maps, complete with shorelines and rivers, and new construction options have also been added, including bridges and piers. Also, there are now beavers and swimming, which were harder to implement than one might think.

Meanwhile, politics within the clan and neighboring settlements get tougher with the Negotiation System – long-running events that require a deft mix of diplomacy and intimidation. If things go wrong, a brawl might break out, but if players are smart and adapt to the flow of conversation, they’ll come out on top. This new mechanic comes with two new skills that people can learn and develop—persuasion and intimidation.

Last but not least, everyone loves a good storm – a happy consequence of the technical work that allows for rivers and beavers means that there are clouds, and even lightning now, too. With all these improvements and more combined, the world of Clanfolk comes alive like never before.

Clanfolk will be available at a 40% discount until May 5, 2024.
