'Monster Hunter' Franchise Celebrates 20th Anniversary, Tops 100 Million Units Sold

Monster Hunter Wilds is a brand-new entry in the Monster Hunter series where players join the ranks of a special Research Commission team investigating the Forbidden Lands.

The Monster Hunter series is now celebrating its 20th anniversary, and Capcom announced that worldwide cumulative sales of the Monster Hunter series surpassed 100 million  units.

In the Monster Hunter games, players hunt larger-than-life foes across expansive natural environments. Each monster poses a unique challenge, so players must plan carefully, form hunting parties with friends, and utilize everything at their disposal to survive these thrilling set-piece quests. As a reward for overcoming their quarry, hunters can harvest the remains to craft equipment and upgrade their customizable arsenal for the challenges ahead.

After the series created a social phenomenon through play on handheld consoles and solidified its standing as one of Japan’s most beloved game series, it went on to global-brand status with the release of Monster Hunter: World in 2018. This title has consecutively sold over 1 million units each year in the seven years since its release, with sales now totaling over 25 million units worldwide, as it continues to set new Capcom record-highs.

Further, in 2021 Capcom released Monster Hunter Rise, followed in 2022 by Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, a massive premium expansion for the base game. Capcom has been promoting wider platform support and long-term worldwide digital sales for these titles, leading both to sell over approximately 2 million units annually since each was released. As a result, cumulative sales of Monster Hunter Rise have surpassed 15 million units while those for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak have exceeded 8 million units.

In addition to exciting new-title releases such as those above, as well as wide-ranging business development activities that reach beyond games—including movies, food, and merchandise—the announcement of Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest title in the Monster Hunter series that is scheduled for release PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam) in 2025, increased interest from game players and helped drive cumulative sales over 100 million units.
