by Rainier on July 9, 2024 @ 11:33 a.m. PDT

Overwatch 2 is a supercharged sequel that will send players deeper into the world and story of Overwatch and build upon the original game's foundation of world-class PvP competition.

In Overwatch 2, players will take on the roles of the world’s heroes in cooperative missions that challenge them to team up, power up, and stand together against an overwhelming outbreak of threats around the globe. Players will also battle each other in the next evolution of competitive Overwatch play, which carries forward existing players’ accomplishments and loot collections and features the current complete Overwatch roster, a new generation of heroes, new internationally recognizable maps that widen the scope of the world, a new Push map type, and more.

In the sequel’s action-packed cooperative Story Missions, players will experience the advent of a new Overwatch as Winston, Tracer, and other members of the original Overwatch join forces with a new generation of heroes. Players will take an active role in the Overwatch saga as a new global crisis unfolds through a series of intense, high-stakes four-player missions. As the story progresses, players will team up as different sets of heroes and fight to defend the world from the omnic forces of Null Sector, uncover the motives behind the robotic armies’ attacks, and come face-to-face with rising new threats around the globe.

Overwatch 2 unveiled their collaboration with Transformers which promises to be more than meets the eye. Gear up with new Transformers-themed skins and join legendary AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS as they bring their epic battle into Overwatch. Transform your gameplay experience with these exciting skins, dive into themed events, and collect exclusive Transformers-inspired rewards.

Here's just some of what players can look forward to:

  • Optimus Prime x Reinhardt: Reinhardt transforms into the AUTOBOTS' leader, Optimus Prime, combining the character's iconic red and blue with Reinhardt’s bold, knightly presence.
  • Bumblebee x Bastion: Bastion's new Bumblebee-themed skin adds a vibrant yellow and black design, perfectly capturing the spirit of the quick and versatile AUTOBOT.
  • Arcee x Illari & Megatron x Ramattra: Experience the sleek agility of Arcee with Illari, or the commanding strength of Megatron with Ramattra, each bringing a unique style to these characters.

Hurry though, this unique collaboration event ends on July 22.

We took the time to let Blizzard Korea Studio’s Bobby Kim share on what it was like to create the concept art and design for Optimus Prime x Reinhardt, and what it was like to bring both worlds together.

Q. How exciting was it to make Optimus Prime x Reinhardt for the new Overwatch 2 x Transformers collab?

Bobby Kim: It's the Transformers series after all! Transformers is one of the best action robot franchises out there, and it gets people's hearts racing, so I knew this was a project I wanted to take on. Transformers and Overwatch are such a great combination. Optimus Prime is the leader of the AUTOBOTS, and after seeing his fearlessness when charging at DECEPTICONS, I thought he was a perfect fit for Reinhardt. I also couldn't wait to incorporate Optimus Prime's silhouette into Reinhardt.

Q. What was the important thing about Optimus Prime you wanted to make sure was included in the design?

Bobby Kim: When developing the skin, I tried to integrate the sturdy, truck-like design that Optimus Prime is known for, such as the front windshield and the exhaust on the skin's shoulders, to make him look more like a speeding truck when he charges. I also tried using sharper, angular parts throughout the skin, which I think captured the iconic look of Optimus Prime.

Q. Are there any fun features about the skin that players should look out for?

Bobby Kim: One of the aspects I love about this skin are the windshield wipers. The technical artist did a remarkable job of bringing my vision to life. The skin is also filled with other mechanical parts that move which add a touch of realism. I can't wait for our players to put this skin on and charge into battle, experiencing these fun little features.

Q. What are some of your favorite Transformers experiences that you want to share?

Bobby Kim: I remember watching the Transformers series on TV with my eyes wide open as a kid. The robots inspired a lot of kids to let their imaginations run wild. To my eyes, every car on the road looked like it could convert at any time, and I still sometimes daydream about it all these years later. While I didn't have the chance to own one of the toys back then, being part of this collaboration feels like the coolest gift I could give my childhood self.

Overall, this collaboration was a fantastic experience. Bringing Optimus Prime and other Transformers characters including Megatron, Bumblebee and Arcee to the world of Overwatch has been a dream come true.

To help realize these missions, the sequel also introduces significant engine upgrades that support larger maps for co-op (PvE) play, as well as the wide variety of new enemies and factions that players will encounter on their missions. The game also introduces visual enhancements designed to bring players’ favorite heroes—and their new looks for Overwatch 2—to life in greater detail.

Overwatch 2 also represents the beginning of a new era for the series’ world-renowned competitive 6v6 play. In addition to carrying forward all of the original game’s heroes, maps, and modes—as well as existing Overwatch players’ accomplishments and loot collections—the sequel adds multiple new playable heroes to the ever-growing roster; widens the scope of the world with even more maps and locations; and adds a new Push map type, in which two teams compete to make a robot (that happens to be pretty good at pushing things) push the map’s objective to their opponent’s side.

Overwatch 2 also renews Blizzard’s commitment to continue supporting the existing Overwatch community. Current Overwatch players will battle side-by-side with Overwatch 2 players in PvP multiplayer. In addition, current Overwatch players will be able to play Overwatch 2 heroes and maps, ensuring the core PvP experience remains dynamic and vital for today’s community in the Overwatch 2 era.

Overwatch 2 is available for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
