'State Of Decay 2' To Get One Final Content Update Later This Year Before Dev Team Moves On To 'State Of Decay 3'

by Rainier on Sept. 5, 2024 @ 12:29 a.m. PDT

State of Decay 2 immerses you in an all-new, multiplayer zombie survival fantasy.

State of Decay 2 is an open-world survival-fantasy game for you and up to 3 co-op friends. After a zombie apocalypse, your small group of survivors seek to rebuild a small corner of civilization, and you get to make all the decisions about how that happens.

You decide who to recruit to your team, where to settle your community, how to fortify and upgrade your base, and when it’s time to move to greener pastures. You select which survivor to bring along on a scavenging run for the food and ammo you need, and who you’ll use to fight off the zombies attacking your base. You choose how you’ll deal with other people who move into your town. Will you be friendly and welcoming... or will you aggressively defend your territory?

Every player’s experience in the game is unique. Each character in your community has their own special set of skills and traits, so no two communities are ever the same. The challenges you face also vary from game to game, based on who you recruit and the decisions you make along the way.

Since 2018, we’ve had the honor and privilege of supporting State of Decay 2 with nearly forty updates and expansions. New modes, maps, difficulties, stories, characters, weapons, cosmetics, bounties, vehicles, events, traits and more — we’ve poured our hearts into making the experience the best it can be, spurred on by your belief in us. Every update addressed your Wishlist requests, fixed bugs, and brought quality of life improvements. We love making the game you love to play.

We know you love this world we’ve created and the amazing community you’ve helped build. While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we are also hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise! Our ambition is to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise, and to do so, we’ll be shifting our focus and resources to making the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3.

You can expect a final content update for State of Decay 2 coming later this year. This final update, Update 38, aims to fix some longstanding issues, implement additional quality of life improvements, and permanently unlock seasonal or otherwise previously-gated content, such as Winter outfits and the Wizard Van.

Here are answers to some of your frequently asked questions:

Q: Is this the end of State of Decay 2? What’s changing?
A: The next update, Update 38, will be the final content update for State of Decay 2, but it is not the end!  Whether you’re an owner or you play on GamePass, the game will continue to be available. We just won’t be creating new content or supporting the game after Update 38

Q: Why is now the time to stop updating State of Decay 2?
A: After careful consideration, we have decided to focus on making State of Decay 3 the best it can be for all of you

Q: Will my [insert preferred feature or bug here] be fixed/implemented?
A: We listen to your feedback on support tickets and the Wishlist, but we can’t get to every suggestion. Rather, our goal is to implement those changes and fixes that help the  most players, in an effort to make the game stable and fun for years to come

Q: Will this affect my saved game(s) or saved communities?
A: No, your saved games and/or communities will not be affected, you will be able to keep playing normally for the foreseeable future

Q: Are you sunsetting State of Decay 2?
A: No. We are stopping content development and developer support for the title. The game will remain available on all existing platforms and for all owners, and included with GamePass subscriptions

Q: Will bounties continue to cycle?
A: Yes, the bounty packs from the Bounty Broker will continue to cycle automatically. You can see that schedule here

Q: What if I find a bug after the final update? Do I still submit a support ticket?
A: After Update 38, we will be closing our support system for the title and no longer accepting bug reports. If you are experiencing a platform issue, please contact Xbox Support. If you are stuck, need advice, or want to know how something in the game works, please refer to our Player Guide (final update coming later this year!) and connect with seasoned players in our Discord

Q: What content is getting unlocked and how can I find it?
A: Any content that was previously seasonal (Halloween masks, Winter-themed cosmetics, etc) will be lootable in the world after the final update

Q: When is the final update coming out?
A: The final update, Update 38, will be released later this year. If needed, we may release at least one hotfix after Update 38

Q: When does State of Decay 3 come out?
A: We’ll have more information to share on the game and its release at a later time. We encourage you to follow us on our socials and stay signed up for our newsletter for timely updates!

Thank you for your continued support and for being the greatest gaming community there is. We’re excited to devote ourselves to making the next game even better.

With love from our Undead hearts,
