Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation—the first three games in this long-running series—are connected both in their stories and the worlds in which they take place. They have come to be known collectively as “The Erdrick Trilogy”— Erdrick being the name passed down to each new incarnation of the legendary hero.

Playing the HD-2D versions of Dragon Quest I & II after Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will allow players to enjoy the connections between these three titles.

In addition to updated HD-2D graphics, both games feature new stories, new areas, and numerous other improvements and updates.

HD-2D is a graphical style developed by Square Enix Co., LTD.’s Team Asano that combines pixel art and 3D graphics. The advanced visual effects used alongside this combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional styles creates a blend that is both new and nostalgic.

Dragon Quest I Story:

Thanks to the heroic efforts of the legendary Erdrick, the Lord of the Underworld was defeated and peace returned to the land of Alefgard. Yet this peace was not to last, as the diabolical Dragonlord has risen and unleashed hordes of monsters on the realm once more. Now, descendant of Erdrick, it is your destiny to defeat this new evil and rescue the world from its plight!

Dragon Quest II Story:

Many years have passed since Alefgard was saved at the hero's hand, earning him the same title as his storied forebear. The descendants of this Erdrick and his scions founded three kingdoms that thrived in peacetime. Yet, darkness stirs once more and a sudden invasion of malicious monsters plunges the world into shadow again. All that stands between the forces of evil and their wicked ambitions is a band of young princes and princesses of Erdrick's lineage. The time has come for them to venture forth and honor their ancestor's legacy!

DRAGON QUEST I

Explore the lands of Alefgard, guided by a mysterious voice!

Led by a mysterious voice heard in a dream, the protagonist (you) arrives at Tantegel Castle. The king advises you to investigate the legendary hero, Erdrick, and the guiding voice, sending you toward Erdrick's Hollow and the Shrine of Rain. Listen to the stories of people you meet along the way as you explore the lands of Alefgard where the legend of Erdrick remains!

• Receive useful items and gold coins from the king of Tantegel. Use the money to buy items and equipment. Remember, you must equip items to use them!
• Use the shortcut button to register your favorite commands as shortcut keys. It's super handy for instantly using recovery items you find in sparkling spots on the field!
• In this game, you can check monsters’ statuses when selecting commands. Choose your attacks while keeping an eye on your opponents!
• Dungeon exploration is dangerous, but treasures like scrolls and mini medals lie hidden within. Deliver your collected mini medals to the person gathering them and you'll receive luxurious items in return.
• During your adventure, you discover a place resembling a dilapidated ruin! A bard named Zalen seems to be researching Erdrick, but...
• An old man calling himself a sage awaits at the long-sought Shrine of Rain! Does he know something about Erdrick or the guiding voice?

DRAGON QUEST II

Stand against the encroaching evil threat and set out on an adventure with companions who are the descendants of Erdrick!

News of the disturbance in Moonbrooke reaches Midenhall, shattering the long-standing peace. As the prince of Midenhall, the protagonist (you) sets out on a journey to uncover the truth behind the disruption! First, seek out companions who also share Erdrick's bloodline and head for Moonbrooke.

• Before setting off, receive words of encouragement and a necklace called the Princess's Pledge from your father, the king. This necklace is said to hold special power, so it will surely aid you on your adventure.
• In this game, you can now choose in the settings whether to display the locations of hidden zones (secret spots) on the field, as well as the positions of treasure chests in towns and dungeons on the map.
• When buying or selling items at shops, you have a chance to obtain “tombola tickets.” Once you've collected some, try your luck at the “tombola stalls” scattered around the world!
• You've reached Cannock Castle, but the Prince of Cannock is missing!? Set out to find him with his sister, the Princess of Cannock!
• While searching for the Prince, the Princess of Cannock joins you in battle! You can't give her action commands at this point, but she'll help the protagonist with various attacks and healing spells.
• Despite searching everywhere based on clues, the prince remains nowhere to be found... Let’s try revisiting places you've already been.

As you progress through DQ II, the faeries will ask you for a favor. Collect the living memories scattered across the ocean floor to unravel the history of Alefgard.

• The Record-Keeper, who manages the faeries' memories, asks you to gather the living memories inscribed with Alefgard's history.
• It seems Hargon's minions scattered these living memories across the ocean floor. Talk to those familiar with the sea, like the merfolk, and search the ocean floor thoroughly!
• While exploring the ocean floor and seabed, you can discover sparkling living memories! Be warned, however, the seabed is also home to terrifying monsters, so proceed with caution.
• The living memories seem to contain records of events that occurred in this world and details about the hero who was the ancestor of the protagonists.
