'Malys' Is A Hellish Roguelite Deckbuilder Coming To PC In 2025, Launches Kickstarter Campaign - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on April 23, 2025 @ 1:23 a.m. PDT

Malys is a twisted roguelite deckbuilder where players embody Noah, a former priest and exorcist turned demon hunter.

As Noah, you will roam the streets of a dark, festering city at night, finding those innocents who have become possessed, and exorcising them of their demons.  But not all is as it seems, and as the player progresses through the game, they will find out far more about the dark and grey of the world than they might ever want to.

Malys blends unique card mechanics and deckbuilding with an atmospheric overarching story (skippable for deckbuilder diehards), hand-illustrated cards, and the creepy, atmospheric feeling of an exorcism. A horrifying, reactive soundscape increases in intensity increases the course of each exorcism, pulling the player into the experience and making the tension feel very real. In order to play cards, you must burn cards first to light Candles - making every hand a series of strategic decisions and sacrifices.

As you pick your path through the city, you’ll encounter its denizens - some friendly, some not so much, and some possessed by demons that you’ll need to exorcise.

Faith is currency in the world of Malys. As you progress through the game, you gain Faith, which you can spend in order to buy Curios, add or remove cards, and heal yourself or upgrade cards respectively. Curios are run-long passive effects, which each add both power and different ways to play.

In Malys, death is not the end. You’ll start the night over from the beginning, with only Noah himself and a few select others aware that the “reset” has even occurred. Noah will begin his hunt again, armed only with his knowledge of what came before.

Manage your Will, effectively Noah's health. Will is your ability to survive encounters with demons; a demon's attacks target your Will, which is persistent between encounters. Hosts also have Will, and in the Expel phase of an exorcism, you have to ensure that both your own Will does not reach zero, nor that of the Host, or it's game over.

Summerfall Studios has launched the Kickstarter campaign for Malys, looking raise $166,189 to secure the funding until the Early Access release, with plans of launching its 1.0 version within six months.

Malys has been a totally new adventure for us, filled with the promise of dark dreams and tantalising terrors, and we can’t wait to share it with players. Doing this Kickstarter campaign will allow us to ensure Malys is that much stronger at launch, and build a community of people to help shape that launch!” says Liam Esler, Managing Director & Co-Founder at Summerfall Studios.

The Kickstarter campaign features a range of rewards, including but not limited to the ability to name a demon after your ex, collaborating with the Summerfall team on exclusive in-game content, a DnD session with Malys’ writer David Gaider (Dragon Age Series, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical), and more - including, of course, the game itself.

The story in Malys was handcrafted by David Gaider, Summerfall's Creative Director and former Lead Writer on the Dragon Age Series, with additional writing by Ben Gelinas.

Malys' soundtrack is crafted by Melbourne-based composer Belinda Coomes, whose work explores the darker edges of music and emotion. With credits including Ring of Pain, As We Descend, and Winnie’s Hole, Belinda combines traditional orchestral composition with sound design elements to build music that is textured, thoughtfully shaped—and haunting.

Key Features:

  • A variety of playable cards each with custom art, abilities, and interplay
  • A hellish menagerie of demons, providing different challenges and encounters
  • Over 50 adaptive stories that change and shift as you progress through the game
  • A new world, story, and characters from David Gaider, former Lead Writer of the Dragon Age series
