'Misspell' Is A Hand-Crafted 2D Metroidvania Coming To PC - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on July 7, 2025 @ 4:40 p.m. PDT

Misspell is a 2D atmospheric Metroidvania, set on the remote island of Melanor — a place where ancient magic and a mysterious disaster have changed everything.

Uncover the secrets of an island risen from the ashes of a catastrophe and master a living vine that changes the way you fight and explore. Every step tells a story — every enemy echoes the mistakes of the past.

After a strange mineral wiped out a whole civilization, only ruins, echoes of the past, and a strange power remain.

You play as a girl whose arm is wrapped in a living magical vine. It absorbs energy from artifacts and transforms into new abilities, letting you reach new areas and fight in new ways. Meet different characters with their own stories, and make choices that change the island and the people who live there.

Travel through hand-drawn biomes — from foggy banks to snowy mountain peaks. Discover mines, forests, temples, and ruins full of traps, secrets, and enemies hiding pieces of the story. Your vine evolves with you — improve skills and collect ancient artifacts that will help in fights with various creatures and exploration of the island.

Misspell began as a dream — one that took root long before we even had a computer to build it on. At first, it was just a simple arcade idea, but the deeper we went, the clearer it became: we weren’t just making a game — we were building a world we wanted to live in,” says Evgenii, one of the developers at Bones Keeper Studio. “It’s a coming-of-age story — both for the heroine, and for us.”

A playable demo lands on PC (Steam) in October 2025.

Key Features:

  • A Hand-Crafted World: Every element in Misspell is lovingly drawn by hand — from vast landscapes to the smallest bits of scenery. Its whimsical, fairy-tale look slowly gives way to a darker tone, mirroring the heroine’s journey toward the truths hidden behind the veil of magic.
  • A living bond with magic: A symbiotic vine coils around the heroine’s arm — her loyal companion and link to the island. It’s more than a weapon: it extends her body, letting her slash, shoot, pull, and hold — connecting her with the world around her.
  • Explore. Evolve. Discover: Harness the energy of ancient artifacts to unlock new forms and abilities for the vine. Gain access to hidden paths, defeat foes, uncover secrets, and reach previously inaccessible areas of the island.
  • Non-linear Narrative: Choices are rarely obvious — but always inevitable. Some characters will stay, others will vanish, leaving only a trace. The ending won’t depend on strength, but on the words, actions, and decisions you leave behind

Misspell is in development for PC (Steam).
