'Dying Light: The Beast' Takes Brutality To The Next Level With Plenty Of Blood & Guts - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on Aug. 5, 2025 @ 10:14 a.m. PDT

Dying Light: The Beast is a thrilling standalone zombie adventure set in a tightly-crafted rural region.

Play as Kyle Crane, a legendary hero who breaks free after years of brutal experiments. Now, he must realize there’s more at stake than just revenge.

Dying Light: The Beast is a thrilling 18+ hours standalone zombie adventure set in the post-apocalyptic Castor Woods, a once-popular tourist destination. After 13 years of enduring experiments, you escape and hunt down your captors to seek retribution, only to discover there’s far more at stake.

While the region is not as populated as it once was, there are still people and factions here, as well as plenty of horrors. Some will ask for your help, others will want to kill you. And that’s not to mention the mysterious creature that’s turned the woods into its personal hunting grounds.

Techland offered a glimpse into the increased gore and brutality levels of Dying Light: The Beast in a new trailer titled “Blood & Guts”. And if the title doesn't give it away, consider this a definitive warning: The video contains extremely brutal and graphic violence - watch it at your own risk!

From the first frame to the last, it delivers a non-stop montage of the most brutal moments of Dying Light: The Beast - including decapitations, bone-shattering slashes, blood-quenching stabs and cool finishers.

Dying Light has always been a franchise in which horror and primal brutality go hand in hand but Dying Light: The Beast elevates it to a new level. “We’ve dramatically increased the body horror to give you this feeling of fighting for pure survival and Kyle’s hunger for revenge,” says Tymon Smektała, Dying Light Franchise Director.

And it’s not just for show - the gore adds a lot of interactive storytelling and to the psychological horror as well: “It's one thing to see a health bar go down; it's another entirely to see the flesh peel away from bone or have a burnt and destroyed faces only inches away from you - that’s how nightmares are made!”

The level of brutality is driven by significant tech improvements to our in-house engine.

“We’ve overhauled the body damage system,” explains Nathan Lemaire, Game Director. “We doubled the number of places on enemies - we call them Gore-Nodes - where players can inflict damage and the number of wounds or injuries that are visible on one single enemy. And we improved the precision of melee attacks - so the angle and trajectory of your strike defines what you hit and how your enemies react to it. So you can target and cut off limbs more precisely than ever!”

The combinations of wounds, mutilations and damage is almost endless, making every fight in Dying Light: The Beast a raw spectacle of blood and gore. And while every combat will feel gory, the brutal finishers take it to the top, with nearly triple the number of finishers!

To have a realistic representation of gore in Dying Light: The Beast, the art team went to some lengths. “We’ve improved all of the visuals of wounds and injuries and match them with all of the body types. The research was extensive - I just hope no one ever looks up my browser history,” says Dominik Wasieńko, Lead Character Artist.

A recent video showcased Techland's efforts to create more realistic blood for Dying Light: The Beast. Katarzyna Tarnacka-Polito adds: “Nothing out there provided us with the reality in blood splatter that we were looking for. So we bought a lot of fake blood and recreated what we needed in real-life with an actor.”

With 7 more weeks till launch, Techland is now even improving and adding a few more details to make it as brutal as possible.

Key Features:

  • BECOME THE LEGENDARY HERO: You are Kyle Crane, the man whose selflessness during the initial virus outbreak saved many from a fate worse than death. After more than a decade in captivity, you find yourself in a world that’s changed, and not for the better. Now, you’ll need to use the survival skills that kept you alive all those years ago to save even more innocent lives.
  • EXPLORE A TIGHTLY-CRAFTED OPEN WORLD: Welcome to Castor Woods! This once-bustling tourist destination is home to a diminishing number of survivors and an increasing population of zombies. Featuring natural landmarks, small villages and industrial complexes, the setting offers diverse traversal options, whether it’s using your parkour skills to gain the upper hand on your enemies or hopping into an abandoned 4x4 to outrun the horrors of the night.
  • UNLEASH THE BEAST TO SURVIVE: They caged you like an animal. Years of brutal experimentation took its toll, but the zombie DNA and yours are now intertwined so that you are able to unleash a beast-like power. It flows through your veins. No one can take it from you. Use it. And you’ll discover it’s not just a curse.
  • SAVOR THE DAY, OUTLAST THE NIGHT: The day brings many possibilities to explore the region and make the most of your time while the sun is still out. But after sundown, the laws of nature take their course. Darkness tends to bring out the worst in the horde, leaving you with no other choice but to run, hide, or fight.
  • SURVIVING IS EASIER IN 4-PLAYER CO-OP: Sometimes it’s best to stick to a group. You never know what you might come across on your adventure. Team up in up to 4-player co-op, or ride solo if you have the guts to take it
    all on your own.

Dying Light: The Beast is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam) on September 19, 2025.
