'Octopath Traveler 0' Reveals More Details About Protagonist's Revenge Story, Companions, Gameplay Mechanics And More - Screens

Octopath Traveler 0 is a HD-2D turn-based RPG featuring a standalone story set before Octopath Traveler.

Octopath Traveler 0 is an expansive RPG that offers a fresh and exciting take on this acclaimed franchise.

The game tells a gripping story of restoration and retribution, set across the realm of Orsterra. Our tale begins in the idyllic town of Wishvale in the verdant Woodlands region - although it’s not peaceful for long. Due to an… unfortunate event we won’t ruin here, the charming settlement is completely destroyed.

In the wake of the tragedy, your hero sets off on a journey to seek revenge - and rebuild your hometown in the process.

For the first time in the series, you create your own customized protagonist, choosing the appearance, voice, motion, and even your favourite dish. Then you’ll take them on a grand adventure over a large and beautiful world full of quests to complete, more than 30 characters to recruit, and people to interact with via the series’ signature Path Actions!

Plus, more than a few dangers to face in gripping turn-based battles with up to eight characters in your party!

As you play, you’ll also rebuild your hometown. As you explore the world, you’ll find resources that you can use to build up your settlement. You’ll place buildings, create decorations and bring its scattered people back to their homes.

And, of course, all this is portrayed in the stunning HD-2D visual style, which combines beautiful pixel art with 3D environments and modern effects. As you can see, it’s real pretty:

The ‘Break and Boost’ battle system returns, now offering even more strategic depth than before. It’s based on exploiting enemy weaknesses to remove their shield points. Once these are at zero, your hapless foe is stunned and will take more damage for a turn.

To help you break your foe, you earn Boost Points (BP). You can spend these to attack multiple times in a turn, strengthen a big hit, increase the effectiveness or duration of abilities and more. Knowing when to conserve your points and when to spend them can be the difference between a quick win or a brutal defeat.

Set on the continent of Orsterra, the world of the original Octopath TravelerOctopath Traveler 0 is a story of revenge and restoration surrounding the divine rings.

This time, we will introduce the story of revenge against those who destroyed the protagonist’s hometown, the travelers who will adventure together, as well as details about the protagonist's job, Town Building, and Action Skills.

A Story of Revenge

Having lost your hometown, you swear revenge against the three powers that control Orsterra and embark on a journey.

Along the way, you encounter those who resist their influence and gain new allies.

What do you seek at journey’s end?

Master of Wealth - Herminia, the Covetous Witch (CV: Marissa Lenti)

A “witch” with an all-consuming desire that has stained the town of Valore with darkness and depravity. Her learning of a certain ring leads to the tragedy that befalls the protagonist’s hometown...

Master of Power - Tytos, the Hero (CV: Erik Ransom)

A “hero” who leads a band of former criminals and rules the town of Emberglow with an iron fist. He visits the protagonist's town and sets it ablaze.

Master of Fame - Auguste, the Playwright (CV: Michael Mishkin)

System Introduction

Town Building

As you rebuild the town, you can construct various facilities.By building a Hub where you can cook,Fieldsand a Ranch for harvesting and gathering various materials, as well as a Shop, you can expand your item lineup with information gathered on your travels and even obtain special trade goods. Each resident also has skills that are useful to the town, so be sure to assign them to the most suitable locations.

Action Skills

“Mastery” items can be obtained from time to time and allow for interchangeable skills that can be used in the “action skill system.” If you build a “Training Ground” in town, you can train your companions and master their skills, and even equip them to other companions! Customize characters to make them uniquely your own!

Ultimate Technique

Powerful “Ultimate Techniques” appear in this game. The protagonist can learn these techniques as the story progresses, while other characters can learn them by training at the“training ground.” The Ultimate Technique gauge has several levels, and when it is filled to its maximum, the technique can be activated at its maximum effect level (Lv. 3). This is a new tactical element that adds to the Break & Boost system.

The Protagonist’s Job

As the story progresses, the protagonist can choose one of 8 jobs (Warrior, Merchant, Thief, Apothecary, Hunter, Cleric, Scholar, Dancer) to pursue.

There are different weapons and skills you can use for each job, so you can choose one that suits your play style, or consider the balance with your companions’ jobs. The choice is entirely up to you.

Octopath Traveler 0 adds new eight-character parties, which adds even more speed and strategy to battles. With both a vanguard (front row) and rearguard (back row) to control, each with their own Boost Points, you’ll discover new ways to take on foes.

You can choose to command either the four heroes in the front row or the four in the back each turn, which opens up wild new strategies. For example, should characters attack from the front row or retreat to the back row to avoid taking a serious hit? Used up your vanguard’s Boost Points to break an enemy? Characters on the back row will have BP ready and waiting to let them deal massive damage to the vulnerable foe!

The choices are many, varied and entirely yours.

It all makes for satisfyingly speedy and strategic skirmishes that never get old!

If you played the mobile title, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, the game’s setup may sound a little familiar. That’s because Octopath Traveler 0 is inspired by story elements and gameplay ideas from that game.

This new entry in the Octopath Traveler series has been designed as full-fledged console and PC RPG. It takes the acclaimed story from the mobile release but reworks it to add new story content and streamlines the overall story for a more compelling experience.

It features a new script with entirely new narrative elements, including new backstories for playable characters) , as well full voice acting that brings the many twists and turns home more effectively.

Similarly, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent featured battles with 8-character parties. Octopath Traveler 0 takes that idea and refines it to create even more strategically satisfying skirmishes.

It also brings entirely new features, such as the town building to restore your hometown - a substantial new element to the game that’s fun and rewarding in equal measure.

In short, it’s the best of both worlds - the amazing story and ideas of the mobile release combined with the gameplay and design that fans have come to love from the console and PC games.
