It begins on Estard Island - a secluded island nestled in a vast ocean. A simple moment of curiosity leads a group of childhood friends into an epic adventure across both the past and present, where they uncover malevolent forces and the true nature of their world.

As the game’s name implies, it’s a full remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, which originally released in 2000 in Japan on PlayStation and 2001 in North America. It later received a remake for Nintendo 3DS, which released February 2013 in Japan and 2016 in North America, Europe and Australasia.

This new version of the game features a new hand-crafted visual aesthetic that brings the world and its characters to life like never before! Not only that, but revamped battle mechanics and quality-of-life features make the game feel fresh and modern - whether you’re a new player or series veteran.

The story has also been significantly streamlined. Told through a series of vignettes with an overarching narrative, it’s been reworked to be pacier and more accessible to players - while still maintaining the narrative depth the game is known for.

The character designs in Dragon Quest VII were originally created by the legendary artist Akira Toriyama. For this game, they’ve been recreated in a charming handcrafted 3D style, which captures all the charm and style of those original designs. The world has also been reimagined as bright and detailed dioramas, which are full of detail while maintaining the original warmth and atmosphere of the original game.

Master a wide variety of vocations and discover your favorite party composition!

In DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined(hereafter referred to as DQVII R), the protagonist and party members can be assigned vocations, enabling them to learn new spells and abilities as their proficiency levels increase. New to the game are starter vocations that are unique to each character, as well as beginner vocations and both intermediate and advanced vocations that are unlocked when certain criteria are met. Withthe "moonlighting" feature, you can mix and match vocations to discover your favorite party composition!

The protagonist and party members all begin with a unique starter vocation, but this can be changed later. There are 10 beginner vocations, including “warrior”, ”mage” and “sailor.” To progress from these, you'll have to discover how to unlock the different intermediate and advanced vocations.

Unlocking intermediate and advanced vocations is not an easy task; however, doing so rewards you with stronger spells and abilities to learn. “Druid” and “hero” are among the advanced vocations unlocked through mastering intermediate ones!

With the game’s new “moonlighting” system, you can assign two advanced vocations at once to create the combination of your dreams. New strategies can emerge depending on your combination, such as moonlighting two vocations that specialize in spells. There's a lot of fun to be had in tweaking your party to your exact liking.

Face “vicious monsters” that have spawned throughout the world!

Mysterious stone tablets transport you to a land where monsters roam free. In this game, in addition to standard monsters, formidable foes known as “vicious monsters” lie in wait for adventurers to challenge them. These vicious monsters may be very powerful, but defeating them will reward you with their “hearts” that can be equipped as accessories, so make sure you’re well-prepared before confronting them!

Powerful monsters known as “vicious monsters” lurk in fields all over the world. Identifiable by their distinctive aura, vicious monsters are far more powerful than ordinary enemies.

Vanquishing these foes will earn you their "hearts" as accessories, or even other rewards! Defeating these vicious monsters is a difficult feat, but their hearts bestow rare effects and are worth every effort to obtain.

DQVII Demo

As a reminder, a free demo of DQVII is available on all release platforms, giving players a taste of the game ahead of launch. Embark on a journey as a trio with Keifer and Maribel! You can use “vocational perks” from their starter vocations during combat.

The world of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is full of iconic monsters. Don’t be distracted by their appealing new designs - these creatures can do some serious damage if not dealt with promptly.

Fortunately, your party are more than up to the task. Enemies are visible on the field - touch one, and you’ll start a battle… unless it’s weaker than you. If that’s the case, pre-emptively strike it and you’ll defeat it there and then, which keeps the adventure moving at a brisk pace.

Combat is turn-based - you issue commands to your party and they execute them. A brand new feature of this game is the ability to Moonlight – essentially, each member of the team can now equip up to two Vocations! These Vocations determine what abilities and spells they have access to in battle, and the new Moonlighting feature means you have more options in battle than ever before!

Each of these vocations also features a special Vocational Perk. These perks range from powerful attacks to buffs for your allies - and although they can only be used when a character is ‘worked up’ they can change the tide of battle in an instant! For example - the Monster Master vocation (new for this version of the game), features the ‘Positive Reinforcement’ perk, which summons powerful monsters to attack your foes!

There are plenty of quality-of-life features to make battles fun and convenient too. As well as automatically defeating weaker foes, you can also set tactics for your protagonist and allies, so they battle to a particular strategy without the need for direct command. You can also speed up fights to make them fly by!
