It begins on Estard Island - a secluded island nestled in a vast ocean. A simple moment of curiosity leads a group of childhood friends into an epic adventure across both the past and present, where they uncover malevolent forces and the true nature of their world.

As the game’s name implies, it’s a full remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, which originally released in 2000 in Japan on PlayStation and 2001 in North America. It later received a remake for Nintendo 3DS, which released February 2013 in Japan and 2016 in North America, Europe and Australasia.

This new version of the game features a new hand-crafted visual aesthetic that brings the world and its characters to life like never before! Not only that, but revamped battle mechanics and quality-of-life features make the game feel fresh and modern - whether you’re a new player or series veteran.

The story has also been significantly streamlined. Told through a series of vignettes with an overarching narrative, it’s been reworked to be pacier and more accessible to players - while still maintaining the narrative depth the game is known for.

The character designs in Dragon Quest VII were originally created by the legendary artist Akira Toriyama. For this game, they’ve been recreated in a charming handcrafted 3D style, which captures all the charm and style of those original designs. The world has also been reimagined as bright and detailed dioramas, which are full of detail while maintaining the original warmth and atmosphere of the original game.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined features significantly enhanced visuals and a reimagined story and battle system compared to the original game in 2000. What begins as a journey sparked by a group of childhood friends' simple curiosity to collect mysterious stone tablets transforms into a grand adventure that will determine the world’s fate. Character visuals are enhanced with a warm, hand-crafted aesthetic, while towns and environments are rendered in a matching, diorama style. In-game models of companions were created by digitally scanning large, physical dolls.

Step into mysterious worlds by assembling fragments of ancient tablets scattered throughout the world. Each stone tablet leads you to a different world. The companions alongside you will grow in number as you venture across numerous worlds.

Aside from adding story content like childhood vignettes, the game now allows you to moonlight vocations during battles, too.

The story begins in a tiny fishing village nestled within a peaceful island

The adventure begins on EstardIsland, floating in the middle of the sea. The protagonist, raised in a tiny fishing village, plots to solve the mystery of the world alongside Kiefer, his best friend and the prince of Estard. The two head toward an ancient shrine located within the island’s Forbidden Place…

Accept your mother's request first when you start the game. After helping her, head outside, then toward EstardCastle with your childhood friend Maribel! You can obtain hints and advice for your adventure by talking to your companions, so be sure to engage with them actively.

At the castle, Prince Kiefer will share how he found an ancient tome and a mysterious fragment of a stone tablet. The two of you decide to meet at the shrine mentioned in the ancient book… You can confirm objectives on the map during your adventure. If you’re ever lost, try heading to the location with the “!” marker. After you arrive at the shrine and present the fragment to a statue that looks just like the picture in the ancient tome, a strange voice reverberates… Kiefer is thrilled to discover that the key to unraveling the world’s mysteries is right here. Now it’s time to explore across the island to find what the statue seeks!

The island townsfolk possess various information. Survey and interact with them while rotating the camera. You won’t be able to proceed in certain situations unless you first solve a puzzle. Uncover solutions by pushing or pulling objects. Monsters that shouldn't exist in this world attack you! Team up with Kiefer to fend them off! Recover with a medicinal herb whenever HP gets low.

Once you fulfill the statue’s enigmatic request and return to the shrine, its sealed gates will open! Maribel, who’d followed you both, joins the team, and the three of you step inside… When you assemble the fragments of the stone tablet on a pedestal in the shrine, a dazzling light engulfs you. What will await you on the other side of this beacon of light…!?

Players can experience a free demo of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined on all platforms and continue their adventure in the full game using carryover save data. Players who possess save data from the demo and play the full release will be gifted a unique in-game “Day Off Dress” cosmetic for Maribel.

The world of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is full of iconic monsters. Don’t be distracted by their appealing new designs - these creatures can do some serious damage if not dealt with promptly.

Fortunately, your party are more than up to the task. Enemies are visible on the field - touch one, and you’ll start a battle… unless it’s weaker than you. If that’s the case, pre-emptively strike it and you’ll defeat it there and then, which keeps the adventure moving at a brisk pace.

Combat is turn-based - you issue commands to your party and they execute them. A brand new feature of this game is the ability to Moonlight – essentially, each member of the team can now equip up to two Vocations! These Vocations determine what abilities and spells they have access to in battle, and the new Moonlighting feature means you have more options in battle than ever before!

Each of these vocations also features a special Vocational Perk. These perks range from powerful attacks to buffs for your allies - and although they can only be used when a character is ‘worked up’ they can change the tide of battle in an instant! For example - the Monster Master vocation (new for this version of the game), features the ‘Positive Reinforcement’ perk, which summons powerful monsters to attack your foes!

There are plenty of quality-of-life features to make battles fun and convenient too. As well as automatically defeating weaker foes, you can also set tactics for your protagonist and allies, so they battle to a particular strategy without the need for direct command. You can also speed up fights to make them fly by!
