13. 'Dead Rising' (X360)

by Rainier on Jan. 1, 2006 @ 1:30 a.m. PST

Dead Rising is survival horror game where you play as Frank West, a grizzled freelance photographer who has made his way to an idyllic suburban town to get his hands on the scoop.

Genre: Action
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Capcom
Release Date: May 2, 2006

Mark "RumDragon" Bolin: Zombies have always had a special place in my heart. Movies, games, and the occasional book on the topic have graced my shelves, and I still can't get enough. Dead Rising promises hordes of the undead for me to destroy with a plethora of weapons including 2x4s, chainsaws, pistols, and even cash registers. The graphics look impressive, and I can't wait to flood the halls with the blood of zombies. With a rather clichéd storyline (photojournalist in a mall full of zombies), I look forward to a never-ending flood of chaotic, bloody vindication.

Matt Mefford: First glimpsed at last November's Xbox 360 "Zero Hour" Event, Dead Rising is the co-flagship Capcom title, alongside Resident Evil 5. Created by Keiji Inafune, Mr. Mega Man, this will be a new take on the Zombie genre. Unlike existing titles on the market, DR looks to have equal amounts of gore, over-the-top action, and gut-busting humor. Set inside a shopping mall, everything is at your disposal for zombie-crushing mayhem (including lead pipes, parasols, cash registers, and even baguettes from the grocery store). Expect to see plenty of hilarious zombie deaths, old-school wrestling moves, and plenty of "Holy *#$! Did you see that?!" moments. This title is guaranteed to bring your friends together for some truly great times.

Corey Owen: While gaming is evolving and the experiences are becoming more engaging and sophisticated, it's nice to see a game that dares to hearken back to the old school days where you just wanted to kill a whole bunch of enemies. There's nothing quite like decimating a room full of zombies. Until Dead Rising, we've all been forced to kill on a few zombies at a time, and that's no way to kill zombies. Finally, a game that lets me drive a lawnmower over a room full of zombies and then grab one by the head and piledrive him into the ground. The sheer number of zombies is astounding, but the fact that each one looks incredible is even more mind-boggling. It's also an excellent sign when Capcom delays the release of Resident Evil 5 so that they can focus on Dead Rising.

Thomas Wilde: I was in this game's corner the moment I saw the trailer at E3. A trailer is rarely a good reason to get excited about much of anything, especially a trailer for an Xbox 360 game at an E3 that was largely devoted to lying about what the 360 is really capable of doing, but... you can powerbomb zombies. I am completely incapable, as a writer and as a human being, to hate any game where I am not only allowed but encouraged to run zombies over with a lawnmower.
