As WP's managing editor, I edit review and preview articles, attempt to keep up with the frantic pace of Rainier's news posts, and keep our reviewers on deadline, which is akin to herding cats. When I have a moment to myself and don't have my nose in a book, I like to play action/RPG, adventure and platforming games.

16. 'Grand Theft Auto V' (PS3/X360)

by Judy on Jan. 25, 2012 @ 12:30 a.m. PST

Set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and the surrounding area, Grand Theft Auto V delivers a world of unprecedented scale and detail bursting with life, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean.

Redmond Carolipio: I actually thought Rockstar was going to leave this franchise alone for a bit, but instead, we'll get an eyeful of Los Angeles through the company's unique pair of eyes. The previous GTA was Rockstar at its gritty best, showcasing the franchise's gift for providing a sandbox environment with life that can't be duplicated. I want to see what they do with the new protagonist, since I'm not sure how you top Niko Bellic. I also want to see if they capture LA with the same gusto as New York.

Reggie Carolipio: My time in GTA IV was a fun Sunday drive down busy streets, shooting my way past guys worse than Niko, helping random citizens, and figuring out the ins and outs of its cosmopolitan underworld. Now I'm hoping that it tacks on more activities to another mature story that doesn't settle only for bowling and darts — especially when I can't stop thinking of San Andreas when I watch the trailer.

Dustin Chadwell: As much as I enjoyed Grand Theft Auto IV, my real love for current-gen Rockstar is centered on Red Dead Redemption. It's easily one my top 10 games for this current hardware cycle, and while I realize it wasn't just GTA in the west, I'm sincerely hoping that there are lessons learned in Red Dead that can be aptly applied to GTA V. Also, taking the game back to the West Coast of the GTA world is a big plus, considering San Andreas is still my favorite in the series. Hopefully, they'll let the player loose a little more on the havoc and mayhem side than the more controlled style of GTA IV's Liberty City, but there are still a lot of unknowns surrounding this title.

Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: I like car chases and gunfights as much as the next guy, but recently the GTA games have all had really well-developed stories. You can cause a lot of mayhem sure enough, but some of the mission design and characters in GTA 4 were genuinely memorably. With the return to San Andreas, I'm hoping there's not too much "I've been here before" in the new game, but the return to Liberty City was certainly anything but, so I remain hopeful. With the dearth of details about the game, it is hard to be excited about any particular thing — other than the glee of causing absolute carnage and the genuine hope that you don't have a clingy cousin this time around.
