4. 'Borderlands 2' (PS3/X360/PC)

Borderlands 2 is the ultimate 4-player role-playing shooter loot fest, featuring all new characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment, which come together in an ambitiously crafted story.

Mark Buckingham: Snarky humor, open-world FPS/RPG hybrid, and even more guns — what's not to like? The first Borderlands successfully melded play worlds that appealed to shooter fanatics, co-op lovers, and loot whores — not an easy task by any means. A tongue-in-cheek take on post-apocalyptic worlds, it's Fallout 3 without all the unnecessary seriousness. Who wouldn't want more of that?

Reggie Carolipio: The bits and pieces trickling out about how Borderlands 2 will be bigger and badder than its predecessor have only made the waiting worse for me. On top of the bajillion guns that the in-game generator will mass-produce, now I'll be able to customize them. I hope that the single-player gets a few improvements, especially after the lackluster ending of the first game, though I'll likely be spending a lot more time in co-op this time around.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: The original Borderlands combined the addictiveness of loot collection with the mechanics of shooters in a way that made it stand out from the crowd. The variety of post-release DLC kept the game thriving, but a sequel was inevitable. With new weapons, abilities and enemies, Borderlands 2 retains the original's strengths. Half the fun of Borderlands was finding the perfect combination of character and weapon to obliterate your enemies. The new ability to dual-wield guns is going to massively increase the available customization options for players. Most of the new features are still shrouded in mystery, but what they've shown so far looks very good indeed.

Brad Hilderbrand: When it comes to sheer volume of stuff to do, there are few games this generation that can compete with Borderlands. While the finale of the main quest may have been a dud, there's so much to do and see that I can forgive fighting the giant vagina with teeth. The new game promises new classes and weapons as well as an enhanced focus on the story. Gearbox showed its commitment to the original game with several outstanding DLC packs, and now the promise of a whole new full-length experience has me dancing like a Claptrap.


Erik "NekoIncardine" Ottosen: The original Borderlands got shooter/RPG hybrids right and proved, once and for all, that Gearbox is capable of highly inspired, creative output. With its unique randomized guns mechanic, sense of humor, and highly distinctive player-characters, the game hits point after point to make a pure example of shooting magic. Even as little as more of the same would be a worthy purchase for many collections, and every sign points to this game having lots of potential.
