7. 'Kingdom Hearts III' (PS4/XOne)

by Judy on Jan. 31, 2018 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

A mature Sora sets out on a new adventure, as Kingdom Hearts III makes full use of next-generation console technologies to deliver more exhilarating, action-packed gameplay and various fun features.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: Kingdom Hearts III is the little game that could. The last numbered Kingdom Hearts console title was for the PS2, and since then, the franchise has only gotten a handful of handheld spin-offs. Against all odds, it's coming along steadily. New nuggets of info trickle out every few months, and the recent Kingdom Hearts 2.8 included a playable Ground Zeroes-style demo starring Birth by Sleep's Aqua. Everything we see of Kingdom Hearts III looks amazing. With fast-paced action combat, stunning visuals, and more Disney than ever, it's everything that fans of the franchise could hope for. New words include "Big Hero 6" and "Toy Story" as well as returning favorites, like Hercules. Just don't ask us to explain the plot ...

Michael Keener: I absolutely love the Kingdom Hearts franchise. The games are the most emotional journey I've ever had in a fantasy world. No game to date has made me feel so connected. The graphics look amazing, especially Andy's house from "Toy Story." I hope Sora's voice will not bee too different from the old Sora.

Adam Pavlacka: When the first Kingdom Hearts game was announced, I was convinced the developers were crazy. Then I played it. A Disney RPG that feels like it was inspired by Final Fantasy? Done. The latest iteration promises worlds based on "Big Hero 6," "Hercules" and "Toy Story." Enemies include Maleficent (here's hoping that you fight her in dragon form) and Hades, among others. It's a mishmash of Disney properties, yet it works. Think of it as the game version of a bootleg mash-up of two favorite songs. Plus, how can you not like Sora? Dude's hair is on point.

David Silbert: It has been over a decade since Kingdom Hearts II graced the PlayStation 2. Since then, Square Enix has released enough browser, handheld and mobile spin-offs to make fans wonder if we'd ever see the end of Donald, Goofy and Sora's adventure. However, 2018 may finally be the year we get some closure. While we know very little about Kingdom Hearts III's plot and worlds, the prospect of exploring untapped Disney properties like "Big Hero 6" and "Tangled" on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is reason enough to be excited. Who knows? Perhaps we'll even see Sora travel to a galaxy far, far away before all is said and done!
