Chris Barnes: Breathless, fists raised in the air, and walking circles around my office: That was my reaction when the "Doom" splash screen appeared at the end of the first game's prologue. Now, three years later, with a hell-infested Earth populated with explosive bolt spears, shotguns with a "meat hook," and enemies pulled from the original Doom 2, there's no doubt in my mind that Doom Eternal will deliver on iD's spectacular 2016 reboot of the series.
Joe Doyle: As a huge fan of history, it warms my heart to see the Doom franchise coming back! Furthermore, the rawness of the game is intriguing - ripping up demons to shreds with very little cause or need for story allows me to just focus on the gameplay. Doom Eternal looks to be just the thing that will reinvigorate my interest in the fantastic FPS.
Cody Medellin: The 2016 iteration of Doom was magnificent, as it brought the formula to the modern era while not abandoning what made the classic run-and-gun so visceral and exciting. For Switch owners, this port was also astounding because few thought such a thing would work on a system with low specs. Adding the double-barrelled shotgun to a largely unchanged formula is enough to get fans excited about this, and it'll be interesting to see if the Switch can still handle a high-fidelity game that'll easily be one of the more eye-catching titles on home consoles and PC this year.
Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: The newest Doom felt like such a breath of fresh air for the franchise, romping around different elevations while viciously taking out hordes of demons. It dropped any trappings of horror that it previously had and went back to the roots of being a badass. Doom Eternal looks like it's shaping up to be basically more of that, with a few tweaks here and there. They're adding even more mobility moves and a grappling hook this time; I really don't need anything more from the game other than a firm release date.
Thomas Wilde: Because screw you, demons. The 2016 Doom revamp captured a lot of the pure adrenaline-fueled twitch fun of murdering the hell out of entire rooms filled with homicidal hellbeasts, and if Eternal just takes that to the next logical level, it'll be well worth my time. The gameplay samples I've seen so far make it look like it's adding just enough to feel fresh without messing too much with the formula, so I'm all about it.
