3. 'Doom Eternal' (Switch/PS4/XOne/PC)

by Judy on Jan. 27, 2020 @ 12:00 a.m. PST

It's Hell on Earth and only one person can repel the demonic invasion. The DOOM Slayer is back to unleash his fury upon the legions of Hell with a host of powerful new abilities, weapons and fearsome demons to put them to work on.

Chris Barnes: Sometimes I boot up 2016's Doom just to make me feel a bit better about dropping $400+ on a graphics card. It ran like dream, played like my best nightmare, and never got old or tiring. With everything we've seen before, I have no doubt in my mind ID Software will once again be releasing a potential game of the year candidate with Doom Eternal.

Chris "Atom" DeAngelus: Doom 2016 was a delightful surprise when it hit. A fast-paced, plot-light rampage through the forces of hell, it hit all the right buttons for modernizing the classic FPS. Doom Eternal looks to be more of the same, with bigger guns, badder demons, shoulder-mounted grenades, and a built-in knife for extremely brutal glory kills. It's Doom, and it looks like you'll give the forces of evil another reason to fear the Doomslayer. Rip and tear until it is done.

Cody Medellin: A holdover from last year's list, it looks like Doom Eternal is finally hitting this year, and from what we've seen, it looks to follow that sequel formula of being bigger and more eye-popping that before. The Hell-torn Earth landscape provides a beautiful place to look at, while the core gameplay of shooting and achieving glory kills still works as well as before. However, it is the use of a new melee weapon that is making us curious to see if a full-fledged sword can work well in this fast-paced environment. As long as it doesn't get the delay bug again, we'll rip and tear into this one in a few months.

Tony "OUberLord" Mitera: There's something about the 2016 reboot of Doom that really worked well, and it was one of those games that when the credits rolled, you thought, "Welp, time to increase the difficulty and start a new run!"  It was smooth, it was violent, and it contained some of the best FPS gameplay in recent memory.  Honestly, Doom Eternal could be more of the same, and I'd have been happy with it.  Instead, the developers are also giving us a sweet laser rune sword, a grappling hook, and a legion of new enemies to plow through.  It's going to be sweet guitar riffs and shotguns, and let me tell you, I am all for it.

Adam Pavlacka: After playing three hours of Doom Eternal, it's safe to say that it is a throwback to the classic gameplay style of the originals. The visuals are cutting edge, and the controls are solid, but the gameplay is all about pushing you into the action. Gamers who grew up on cover shooters are in for a rude awakening, but players who enjoy diving in and tearing up shit are in for a treat. Down your energy drink, turn the metal up to 11, and get ready to blast everything in sight.
