Chris Barnes: Comprised of ex-Avalanche Studios developers best known for the Just Cause franchise, the personnel at Experiment 101 are no strangers to explosions and zany fun in their games. Set in a vibrant, fantastical world filled with customizable mutant cats, crawling hand vehicles, and lush colors, Biomutant, the studio's debut game, looks to expand upon the wacky sandbox nature of Just Cause. It feels like forever ago since we've received news on this game, but it seems like it will be worth the wait.
Andreas Salmen: It's been quiet around Biomutant lately, but that doesn't change its promising concept, even though I'm not sure how much of the game that I played at Gamescom over two years ago is still in place. What I saw was an overtly non-traditional action RPG that wasn't afraid to go overboard when it needed to, with mutated creatures, weird enemies and bosses, and a crazy combat system. Whether it comes together into a game that is fun to play will be revealed when it releases in May 2021.
Rainier Van Autrijve: It's been quite the wait for Biomutant, which was announced in 2017, but it's almost there! Developer Experiment 101 may be unknown to most people, but it is led by a former Avalanche Studios exec who worked on the Just Cause franchise. The last time we actually saw the game was in 2018, so barring any further delays, we'll finally be able to play the open-world, postapocalyptic kung-fu action/RPG. Starring a furry rodent reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy's Rocket Raccoon, our protagonist has an affinity for guns and upgrades (mutations). Add in some mech action, and you have an explosive combat system on your hands. The game world looks lush and colorful, there's a variety of biomes, boss fights, crafting, plenty of missions, looting and a Metroidvania-style progression system. What's not to like?
