'Sacrifire' Is A New RPG For All Consoles And PC, Kickstarter Launched - Screens & Trailer

by Rainier on June 14, 2021 @ 11:44 p.m. PDT

Inspired by jRPGs of the past, Sacrifire features a unique blend of real-time and turn-based combat, music by Motoi Sakuraba, and a combination of gorgeous 2D and 3D artwork.

SacriFire tells the story of Ezekiel Ridan, a young soldier training to join an elite sect of the Church of Sheol. Ezekiel longs to do his part keeping the underground city of Antioch safe from the demons which roam the surface above, but little suspects the role he is soon to play in a more profound struggle – a struggle thousands of years in the making, waged between entities far beyond his understanding.

Ezekiel’s adventure will lead him to places he would never have imagined, and will uncover secrets which cause him to question everything he believes. But will the journey change him for better or worse? Play SacriFire to find out.

You’ll soon discover that no two SacriFire fights play out the same way — if you want to defeat your foes you’ll need to change up your strategy, items and skills on a regular basis. Fans of PSX classic Vagrant Story might recognise the basis for our affinity system, in which tailoring your attacks to exploit enemy weaknesses is key to winning battles.

Tailor your approach for each encounter by selecting the appropriate skills, items and weaponry to target each of the enemy’s affinities and defeat them with a minimum of effort. Match all three enemy affinities, and you might be able to obliterate your opponent with a single attack!

Soldiers of the Church of Sheol aren't expected to fight demons empty-handed. The DIVOS gauntlets are Ezekiel’s weapons for much of SacriFire, and they’re more dangerous than meets the eye, capable of generating transforming into a variety of “astras” (weapons forged from spirit energy) with which Ezekiel can combat the demonic plague of Heresy.

As the player progresses through the game and completes challenging trials, new astra possibilities will be unlocked, allowing the DIVOS gauntlets to change into a sword, crossbow, spear, chakrams, hammer and – depending upon your support – perhaps more…

Developer Pixelated Milk has launched a SacriFire Kickstarter campaign, looking to raise $99,411.

“The team here at Pixelated Milk is incredibly excited to be announcing the Kickstarter launch for SacriFire, our upcoming JRPG-inspired title” said Bartosz Łojewski, Project Lead at Pixelated Milk. “Beautiful retro pixel art, a blend of real-time and turn-based combat, and music by Motoi Sakuraba are all going to come together in a game that is a love letter to games we loved. Players will encounter memorable characters, an underground city, a world of spirits, a war between gods and demons, and one soldier’s ultimate test of faith, you know… everything a good JPRG needs!. We’re seeking 82,000 euros on Kickstarter to help fund this ambitious project, but the sky is the limit!”

Tired of endlessly repeating the same attack in order to whittle down an enemy’s health? No problem – in SacriFire, players can build unique and flashy chains by stringing weapon attacks together. Open with a powerful starter to expose enemy affinities, follow with some brutal, damage-multiplying combos, and wrap it all up with a devastating finisher. You can create shorter attack chains to experience quicker turns, or make them longer and more elaborate – the choice is yours.

Opponents’ body parts are individually selectable in combat, allowing you to aim for vulnerable targets to deal greater damage. Be careful, though, because the greater the prize, the riskier the game – in order to target weak points, you may need to expose yourself to counter-attacks. Successfully strike a vulnerable body part (such as the head) enough times and you'll wound your enemy, inflicting a permanent impairment.

While SacriFire is primarily Ezekiel’s story, rest assured – there will be plenty of opportunities to bring a companion along for the ride. Player companions will explore and fight alongside Ezekiel, offering guidance when needed, sharing interesting tidbits of information about the world and the mission, and (naturally) delivering plenty more of the typical witty banter that Regalia was known for.

As you progresses through the game you will unlock “Virtues”, which you can switch between freely during combat. Each Virtue grants increased ability with certain weapons, and complements a specific playing style. Will you try to conquer your enemies through brute strength alone, powering through horde after horde of demons like a medieval battle tank in golden armour? Or will you favour a more subtle approach, dealing damage from afar and dodging out of range of enemy attacks? It's up to you!

Each Virtue also has its own skill tree. As you progress, you’ll gain “Spirit Points” which can be spent, allowing the player to choose which skills, passive attributes, and abilities to unlock. We currently have five disciplines planned for the game, with a sixth waiting in the stretch goals. For spoiler-related reasons, we’ll only be going into four of them here, though!

Throughout SacriFire, players will frequently find “anima orbs” which they can link together to upgrade their DIVOS weapons. These upgrades do much more than simply buffing stats – they allow for considerable customisation. Players can tailor each weapon to target individual affinities and to inflict specific status changes on enemies, making combat a truly personal affair.

Exploration is hugely important in SacriFire, that's why the developer we wanted to make controlling Ezekiel feel like a joy, not a chore, so you’ll be able to walk, run, climb and jump around the world of SacriFire, always benefitting from a tight control scheme that feels fun and natural to use. Meanwhile, puzzle-solving will require players to figure out different ways of interacting with dynamic environments.

Key Features:

  • Dynamic battles – Our combat engine merges real-time and turn-based styles to provide a fluid experience that is both challenging and satisfying. Fight alongside companions, choose from multiple weapons, target individual enemy body parts, and string attacks together to create elaborate combos.
  • High-quality presentation – Employing both pixel art and 3D graphics allows us to combine retro-style graphics with innovative digital effects wizardry. Hand-drawn and animated characters blend seamlessly with 3D-modeled environments.
  • Moral complexity – SacriFire’s original story aims to both respect and subvert the standard RPG tropes, so although you’ll feel right at home with our cast of lovable characters, you’ll never know what to expect next!
  • A tale of two worlds – Travel between the sprawling subterranean city of Antioch and the idyllic spirit paradise of Erebus in a well-developed game universe which includes elements of both fantasy and science-fiction.
  • Elaborate gameplay systems – Adopt diverse combat disciplines, craft weapons, solve puzzles and tackle imaginative dungeons.
  • Original Music and professional voice acting – A brand new soundtrack composed by G4F Records, and the legendary Motoi Sakuraba. The talented Sound Cadence Studios bring SacriFire’s memorable cast to life!

SacriFire is planned to launch for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Epic Game Store, GOG) in 2022.
