Mythic Entertainment Announces 'Imperator'

by Rainier on June 26, 2002 @ 6:46 p.m. PDT

"Imperator" is an Alternate Earth game, one set in a future world where Ancient Rome never fell. Small changes at crucial moments in Roman history create an entirely new timeline for Earth, leading to a star-spanning Roman Republica and thousands of years of interstellar Pax Romana. The Republic is home to many planets, each containing wildly different flora, fauna, creatures, culture, and climate. As the game begins, new threats to the Republic have sprung up from beyond its borders, making the galaxy more dangerous and the Republic itself less stable an exhilarating setting for an online gamer. Over the last few decades, many themes of classical Roman history have found their way into modern science fiction and fantasy -- in "Imperator" the architecture, beauty, nobility, and even the savagery of Rome are the heart of the game.
Imperator is an Alternate Earth game, one set in a future world where Ancient Rome never fell. Small changes at crucial moments in Roman history create an entirely new timeline for Earth, leading to a star-spanning Roman Respublica and thousands of years of interstellar Pax Romana. The Republic is home to many planets, each containing wildly different flora, fauna, creatures, culture, and climate. As the game begins, new threats to the Republic have sprung up internally and from beyond its borders, making the galaxy more dangerous and the Republic itself less stable – an exhilarating setting for the online gamer. Over the last few decades, many themes of classical Roman history have found their way into modern science fiction and fantasy, in Imperator the architecture, beauty, nobility, and even the savagery of Rome are the heart of the game.

“Mythic has once again proven that we are one of the leading online game developers in the industry,” explained Mark Jacobs, President of Mythic Entertainment, who has been conceptualizing and designing online games for almost 16 years. “The foundation I’ve laid for Imperator can be summarized in one phrase ‘The experience defines the player.’”

With Imperator, Mythic will create a revolutionary game that will help define the MMORPG genre for years. While many features of the game will be familiar to today’s gamers, Imperator will intertwine them with new elements in a decidedly different manner than the current generation of online games. Gamers of all kinds will find a home in Imperator whether they play ten hours or a hundred hours a week. Additionally, unlike many other online game developers, Mythic is looking to compete for the same market as Star Wars Galaxies being developed by Sony and LucasArts. The effort that it will take to go head-to-head with the flagship game of those companies is not going to deter Mythic.

“When we first began work on Dark Age of Camelot, everyone in the industry thought we were crazy to compete with EA, Microsoft and Sony, and that we were doomed to failure. As our success has shown, this was not the case,” added Jacobs. “Sony and LucasArts have some of the best people in the industry working on Star Wars Galaxies but so does Mythic and soon they will be focusing on Imperator. We look forward to the challenge; it’s going to be fun.”

Having passed 200,000 active subscribers worldwide after nine months on the market, Mythic’s Dark Age of Camelot continues to excite the MMORPG world. With the games continued growth, including upcoming releases in the fertile Japanese and Korean markets, it won’t be long before Dark Age of Camelot is competing for the number one MMORPG worldwide.
