'WWII Online' Readers Choice Edition Announced & Gold

by Rainier on June 28, 2002 @ 5:54 p.m. PDT

Strategy First, Playnet.com and Cornered Rat Software announced today that they will be launching a new version of their massively multiplayer online game. WWII Online bounced back in 2001 to win IGN and Gamespy Reader’s Choice Awards. Now, the new retail version, WWII Online Readers’ Choice Edition, has gone gold and will be available in late July 2002.
World War II Online is an online combined arms simulation set in a relentless, action-packed environment where players can command and crew a variety of accurately modeled vehicles and aircraft, sling weapons, and fight as foot soldiers with and against thousands of other gamers. Set in 1940, it includes equipment and major battle points: strongholds, fortresses, forests, rivers and more – much as it was on the battlefields of Europe.

The Readers’ Choice Edition will contain a new version of the game along with numerous new features and enhancements.

Some of which are:

  • New vehicles and weapons
  • All new terrain
  • New objects and tons of concealment for ground troops
  • A redesigned interface
  • New mission launch lobbies and a key mapper
  • Upgraded mission, rank and strategic systems
  • First-person shooter perspective
  • New animations and control systems
  • Increased performance and rock solid connects
  • The Reader’s Choice Edition also contains special bonus items, such as a large foldout wall map of the battlefield; the official music track, and 20 original illustrations and wallpapers inspired by the game. These special bonus items are exclusive to this edition and will not be available anywhere else.

WWII Online is still the first and only massively multiplayer first-person virtual battlefield that covers a ½ scale map of Europe with accurate terrain modeling. It allows thousands of players to play 24/7 in a persistent world in which character advancement and career paths provide players with a rich RPG layer and strategic systems are driven by player missions and command structures.

An extensive web-based player services package provided by www.playnet.com is integrated with gameplay. Players from around the world can take part in recreating history and embarking upon a new adventure on their very own computer screens.

At a suggested retail price of $29.99 US, WWII Online: Readers’ Choice Edition will be distributed by Infogrames. For more information, log onto WWII Online Website or Strategy First Website.
