Praetorians - Demo Available NOW

by Rainier on Jan. 10, 2003 @ 12:57 a.m. PST

Praetorians is an epic 3D troop based strategy game centred around the historical battles from the campaigns of Julius Caesar. Taking on the role of a Roman General you are transported back to the deserts of Egypt, the frozen lands of the Gauls and to the heart of the Empire itself, Italy. The quest will be no easy task as the lands you seek to conquer are heavily defended by thousands of troops, all with special skills and individual strengths and various war machines. A few weeks ago there was a leaked (and therefor pulled) demo, this is now the official demo. Read more for details and links where to grab this beauty...

The Praetorians demo comes with one mission from the full game, Crossing the River Arar. While one mission might not sound much, it is playable in both easy and normal mode, and you only have a finite number of soldiers to play around with and a vast number of enemies to vanquish, so it's a fair old challenge.

The objectives in the mission are varied. As the Roman war machine, working your way through woodland paths and taking out enemies (sometimes they hide in the trees, the sneaky sods), you are tasked initially with subduing a village that lies on the near side of a river. Once that objective is accomplished, you are then required to build a couple of bridges, cross the waterway and then subdue a second village that lies on the far side.

As you romp around the map, leaving devastation in your wake, keep an eye on your one build/repair unit, protecting it at all costs. Also be sure to keep your generals out of harms way, because if they come a cropper then it's game over, curtains, shuffling off this mortal coil and so on.
