Darkmonth Studios Announces 'Damn Dirty Apes'

by Rainier on April 25, 2003 @ 12:37 a.m. PDT

Darkmonth Studios are pleased to confirm the development of their first original title, Damn Dirty Apes, and are now actively seeking a publisher for the game. Developed for the PC, but designed with a view to portability to next-generation consoles, Damn Dirty Apes is a cartoon real-time action war game.

In Damn Dirty Apes, you are put in control of the Ape Army's elite fighting force, 51st Banana Battalion, and must guide your troops through 5 epic wars against your Simian brothers; Gibbons, Orangutans, Baboons, Chimpanzees and Gorillas.

Fast-paced, fun-filled, entertaining arcade action is the name of the game in this 3D real time action war game of primate proportions.

Damn Dirty Apes Features:

  • Fight in 5 Great Wars each containing 4 massive campaigns;
  • Many large environments, themed to historic wars of the past... and future;
  • Utilise dozens of weapons from each era, including heavy machine guns, explosives, rocket launchers, napalm grenades and sticky bombs;
  • Control mission specific characters each with unique abilities and firepower;
  • Colourful cartoon-like environments and characters;
  • Features patented Blood-o-Rama technology to accurately recreate effects of extreme firepower on simian anatomy;
  • Full set of animations per character including multiple death sequences; and
  • Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Last Man Standing and Team modes available multiplayer over LAN or on-line.

Damn Dirty Apes strips away the over-realism and unnecessary depth of current real-time strategy war games and replaces it with fast-paced, fun-filled arcade action.

Graeme Laws, Creative Director at Darkmonth Studios commented, "With Damn Dirty Apes, we wanted to make a game that was fun and entertaining. We view Damn Dirty Apes as a form of escapism, offering a refreshing change from the realities of war which we see not only in a lot of modern RTS and FPS games but, sadly, in our media everyday. Aside from that, everyone loves monkeys, and there's no better feeling than making an Ape soldier lob a napalm grenade at a group of Orangutan soldiers in a simian version of 'Nam!".

Funded by their highly-successful high-profile outsourcing operation, Damn Dirty Apes is fully-designed and at an advanced stage of development. An experienced team, Darkmonth Studios is aware of the typical development pitfalls and from the outset have set themselves a highly disciplined, tight schedule which is expected to be concluded later this year, with the view to a Quarter 4 release.

Graeme Laws added, "Although, in company terms, we're very young, our team is high on expertise and experience. We've all learned from past experience and from the outset we have set out to be creative yet disciplined and efficient. We're aware of the typical development problems, which is why we've been working from a completed design and a self-imposed tough schedule for the past few months. Having previously been involved in the development of classics like the GTA series and Wipeout 2097 and worked with Atari and Konami on high-profile outsourcing projects, we've become accustomed to producing quality work in short timescales."

Darkmonth Studios will have representatives present at E3 2003, where they will be debuting a demo of Damn Dirty Apes to selected parties, and would be delighted to meet with any potentially interested parties at the event or thereafter.
