'Soulcalibur II' - Namco's Most Successful US Launch

by Rainier on Sept. 9, 2003 @ 9:36 a.m. PDT

A new page in history has begun as the most highly anticipated fighting game ever finally arrives! The greatest 3-D weapons-based fighter will provide non-stop action, excitement and surprises as you go one-on-one against your favorite challengers.

Leading video games publisher, Namco Hometek Inc. announced today that Soul Calibur II, the sequel to one of the most revered weapons-based fighter video games of all-time, shipped over 1.6 million units on its first day, the largest day one release in the history of Namco’s U.S. division.

“The release of Soul Calibur II marks a monumental moment in Namco’s already rich video game history,” said Namco’s Chief Financial Officer, Robert Ennis. “Never before has a Namco title sold as well in its U.S. debut and we hope that this is just a glimpse at what is to come for the ‘Soul’ franchise.”

“Soul Calibur II is one of Namco’s most valuable video game franchises,” said Garry Cole, Senior Vice President of Sales, Namco Hometek Inc. “I think that the value of the property is exemplified in that we were able to sell through nearly 10 percent of our initial launch quantity on day-one alone.”

Soul Calibur II is now available on the PlayStation2, the Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox. The game features improved game play, upgraded graphics and a variety of game modes. Soul Calibur II also received the “Best Fighting Game” award at the 2003 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Along with additional game content unique to the U.S. version, Soul Calibur II features 10 game modes, console-exclusive characters, a host of unlockable characters and arenas, and over 200 collectible weapons and items.
