'Real Time Worlds' Licenses Unreal Engine 3

Real Time Worlds, formed by the original GTA & Lemmings creator, and Epic Games today announced that Real Time Worlds has obtained a studio-wide license for Unreal Engine 3 for the creation of next-generation PC and console game titles, starting with All Points Bulletin.

The first game to use Unreal Engine 3 under this agreement is All Points Bulletin, the massively multiplayer online game being published by Webzen, Inc., who also has obtained multiple Unreal Engine 3 licenses. A genre-breaking game unlike any other in the MMO space, All Points Bulletin offers intense game play in a highly volatile world filled with dramatic car chases, shootouts, busts, escapes and arrests. Players can also enjoy a fully customizable gaming experience allowing them to choose character appearances, attitudes, music preferences and more.

Founded in March 2002, Real Time Worlds employs 80 people and is led by three game industry veterans who, between them, are responsible for some of the world's most popular games. Real Time Worlds' Creative Director David Jones, founder of DMA Design, is the creator of two of gaming's most successful franchises, Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. Ian Hetherington, former managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, founded Psygnosis, one of the United Kingdom's first videogame publishers. Tony Harman, former director of development and acquisition for Nintendo of America, was the executive producer of the Donkey Kong Country franchise.

“We have been very impressed with the UE3 technology and design tools. It has allowed our artists to deliver the stunning visual impact they wanted, early in the project life cycle. Likewise our code team has been empowered to focus on the unique aspects of what we need, building on top of a great code base. And last but not least, our designers have been able to prototype to their hearts content,” said David Jones, Founder and Creative Director, Real Time Worlds. “As we build on the technology, extend it for our specific online needs, we plan to be a long term partner with Epic building projects of all sizes on many platforms.”

“It is a massive privilege to have Real Time Worlds using Unreal Engine 3 to create APB which will undoubtedly be another world-class franchise from the creator of so many hit games.”, said Mark Rein, Vice President and Co-founder of Epic Games Inc. “Considering the long-standing heritage and pedigree at Real Time Worlds I am certain that APB will be just the first of many major hit games they will create with Unreal Engine 3”
