Electronic Arts Lowers Current Gen Launch Prices

by Rainier on Feb. 21, 2006 @ 12:37 p.m. PST

EA announced today that it is lowering prices on its upcoming current generation PS2 and Xbox prices. This week Fight Night Round 3 is getting released, and should be in most retail stores by now, and gamers will only have to pay $39.99 for it, instead of the usual $49.99. But EA is not stopping with this one title, as also The Godfather and BLACK will be sold at that same price, a 20% reduction.

"$39 is resonating with consumers given the transition," EA spokesman Jeff Brown said. "There are indications that $39 is a solid and sustainable price point."

It is general knowledge by now that video game sales have dropped significantly as consumers wait and save for new consoles. Game publishers for months have said that price cuts on current-generation games could be used to jumpstart sales. Back in late January EA had already lowered the price on its racing title Need for Speed Most Wanted, due to slipping sales numbers, from $49.95 to $39.95, which stabilized the turnaround.

BLACK is scheduled for release February 28 while The Godfather is launching March 14.
