EA's Video Game Scores for TV, Film and Commercials

by Rainier on April 17, 2007 @ 4:52 a.m. PDT

EA has signed an agreement with APM Music to make game scores from its video games such as The Sims, Medal of Honor and Tiger Woods PGA Tour available for use in television, films and other media, expanding on a nine-year relationship between the two companies.

The first 10 CDs produced through this agreement span numerous musical genres. “Medal of Honor–Redemption” provides powerful orchestral cues while “The Sims: Jazz Lounge” lays out groovy retro tracks and sweet bossa novas. The thumping “EA Sports Rock” offers gritty rock, driving beats and hard-core electronica which contrasts with the sweeping, cinematic orchestral cues and transitions of “Medal of Honor.” The music scores from the selected EA titles, which were originally created for use in video games, were edited by APM Music into tracks ideal for licensing into television, film, commercial and new media productions. An additional 10 CDs are planned for release each year, continuing to draw from EA’s existing and upcoming video game releases.

The collection includes music from top composers in the field including such talents as Michael Giacchino, who scored countless video games as well as movies such as “The Incredibles” and the theme for television’s “Lost” series, Paul Linford, whose talents helped fuel the game “Need for Speed: Most Wanted," Academy Award®-winning electronica composer Brian Transeau, also known as “BT” on dance floors across the globe, as well as Grammy award-winning and Emmy-nominee, Christopher Lennertz.

“Some of the most innovative music being produced today is being done in video games. We are very excited to be bringing these unique musical assets to the film and television markets for the first time,” stated APM Music president, Adam Taylor.

Nielsen Media Research released a study in March showing the number of U.S. households with video game consoles has risen more than 18 percent since 2004, reaching 45.7 million. This does not even include PCs and Macs used for games in the home or mobile gaming options.

“With the industry selling over $10 billion in games a year and leading titles moving more than a million units each, the public has built up a familiarity with this form of entertainment and the music that accompanies it,” stated Steve Schnur, EA’s worldwide executive of music and marketing. “Video game music strives to evoke emotions and enhance the visual experience across a wide range of situations and moods, ideal for use in television, film, commercial and new media productions.”
